Reasons for not vaccinating
My husband and I have decided to do an alternative schedule. We have done a lot of research into this (reputable sources), spoken with our pediatrician (who recomends a slower schedule) especially since my DD wont be in daycare, and we can go at a slower pace.
From our research what to be most concerned about is the perservatives and addiditives that they put in these vaccines. Most alarming is the amount of Mercury. Some shots, which some pediatricians give 4-5 shots at 1 visit can contain more than 100% of the the recommended levels of Mercury that an infant/baby can handle. 100% MORE. To each is own and everyone has the right to make the decision that is right for them. There are MANY things to consider such as if your child is going into daycare. Different families have different needs. For my family we have decided to take it slow. In the hosp they ask if you want the Hep B Vaccine for your baby within the 1st day of life. Hep B is a sexually transmitted disease OR IV drug user disease. Even our pediatrician said this shot is not needed. My DD is 7 weeks and is not getting that until she absolutely needs it, which is before she starts school.
They also have vaccines available where you purchase the vaccine and they are made without persatives and without addidtives. My husband and I are currently looking into that and going to discuss this alternative with our pediatrician.
Just do research and follow your own instinct. Just because someone has an MD behind their name doesnt mean they know everything. There are PLENTY of bad Drs out there that make bad decisions that kill patients or harm them. And most Drs dont have an expertise in every area of medicine. Dont listen blindly to anyone ever.

Re: Reasons for not vaccinating
I waited until my kids were over 2 to get the MMR. Lots of questions concerning thic vac, I wanted to be sure of my children's development prior to the shot. Neither had any reaction.
I put off chicken pox as well , but both kids are now caught up.

Reasons for not vaccinating
I vax on an alternate schedule; giving just 1 shot at a time. I'm delaying mmr and varicella. I haven't decided when he'll get them, but not any time soon (he's 14 months.)

I am pro vaccine, because when i get the letters home from my DD's school about whooping cough, measles, etc. I call up my ped and they tell me that she has the required vaccines and has the immunity to it so she will not catch it.
Actually she can still catch anything at any time. That's my rub.
Vaccines are not a cure-all they are a best hope. They LESSEN the disease but do not actually prevent it completely. If they did that, we'd not need vaccines, the disease couldn't spread.
But kids fully vaccinated still get any of the many diseases they are meant to protect from and they still die from those same things as well. Some say "well that's just a low %" but to me as a mother that % doesn't matter a bit if its my child. She's my 100%
I loathe vaccines because they are NOT the same ones we got. Its not 'just the same as it has been forever'. The drug is different, the handling of it, the manufacturing of it, the ingredientds. The sheer NUMBER of drugs we pump through our children is higher than we got. And yes, I do believe we are even giving this higher dose of drugs to our children younger than our generation did.
I preferred the spread out schedule. AJ is supposed to get 4 at her 4y visit. She's getting just 1. Then 1 every 6 months until shes 6. Its why she's not going to public school at 5.

Re: Reasons for not vaccinating
I agree with PP's on considering sources of info. Also, in addition to that, it is CRUCIAL to know HOW to read research. Some people will read a piece of research and only read the abstract or the results and come to conclusions based on that...there is SOOO much more to interpretting research then looking at results or abstracts.
First, you need to know the length of the study, what controls were used, what limitations there were (will be in the discussion area AFTER the results), how many people were involved in the study, what factors these participants did and did not share, etc. You also do need to see how many studies were done to prove a point. Many researchers will prove their theory in research, but due to limitations described above, they recommend further study...then there should be a follow up study minus the limitation (although likely with a new limitation) to further prove the theory. One time I got into a debate with a woman about this very topic. She sent me a link to a study, which was loaded with limitations including a serious conflict of interest (the woman who conducted said study was not qualified to complete such data and she was trying to sue a pharmacutical company the "study" was about). Also know, for every study that proves one thing, I can show you one that proves another. Thats just the nature of research.
Also, web sites...most that provide information that is MORE reliable are ones that end ".org" in their web site. Also, same discussion with same person I mentioned above, she sent me info from an anti-vax web site.
Basically, I also agree that if you are on the fence, have a serious discussion with your Ped. They have found that developmental issues are evident before MMR (some signs are) is even given. People notice the big symptoms when a child is around 2, which just happens to be around the time MMR is given. Based on what I have read, it has been cioncidental, but like I said, they are now seeing some preliminary symptoms of autism in infancy.
My personal opinion is that its not just your kid that you have to worry about, its also the infant who isnt vaccinated because they cant be vaccinated who your child comes in contact with. Measles is highly contagious and very dangerous. The benefits of vaccines outweigh the risks in that way.
I think there are a lot of reasons we see more of things like cancers, developmental delays, etc now. There are endless theories on the subject. There was even a study that linked maternal obsity to developmental delays. There are a lot of envirnmental factors...look at all of the chemicals we breath, ingest, etc. Look at our food...chemicals in everything!!! I just realized recently that my child's vitamins had one of the worst chemicals ever in it...aspertame! We ingest flouride (always been a bigger issue to me than vaccines, since from what Ive read that this rat poison has only a benefit to teeth when applied topically)), which builds in your body...I could go on and on. Think about all of THOSE asaults on a little childs system!
In addition, its more well known and we are better at ID-ing them (developmental delays). Once upon a time children with CP, autism, etc would be put away in institutions. Now we see this population in the general classrooms. I think this link will help answer a lot of misconceptions including some you mentioned. Link to CDC info and stats re: vaccinations
