Asking your boss to cut your hours
What would you have done/do if they say NO?

Re: Asking your boss to cut your hours
If I wanted to stay working for them, I'd smile and say, "It didn't hurt to ask, right?"
If I wanted to not work anymore, I'd say, "I'm sorry, but this is all I'm in a position to offer at this point" and probably resign.
Have you already asked and they said no? If not, go for it. I was that boss at one point and I was 110% for having the woman go to PT, but I thought my boss above me would have trouble with it. Turns out he was fine with it, just couldn't be the one to offer it -- had to wait for them to ask, KWIM?

I haven't asked yet but I'm trying to figure things out with the kids before I go back whether it goes one way or the other.

I would resign
This.
I had every intention of returning to work FT after DD was born (she's 3.5 now). I was miserable and decided I wanted to only work 3 days a week.
I returned to work after a 6 month maternity leave, to a new department, a new boss and a brand new job function. I asked my new boss about working PT. It took him FOREVER to let me know if it was approved or not. I was 100% prepared to resign had they said no.
They approved it, but then I got pregnant again when DD was 10 months old and when I went out on maternity leave again I did not return to work.

I would resign
Eventually i would resign after i found a new job that had the hours i was looking for. You cant stay on knowing you need adjusted hours. My kids are my #1 priority...my job is something i do to pay the bills.
I got very lucky and my boss has been very understanding when it comes to my family and finding a balance. She agreed to reducing my hours daily and after DD is born she is allowing me to work from home a few days a wk also.

Re: Asking your boss to cut your hours
I went back to work fulltime when my DD was 16 weeks. About 2 months in I asked my boss if it would possible to change to parttime. Her first response was at that time it was not possible. I was going to start looking for another job. Not too long later though it was possible for them to change me to parttime and I took it. If I wouldn't have changed to parttime I'm sure I would have changed jobs by now.

This is what I did. Although I did it before I had kids...knowing what my world would become once they came. I actually took a step down from a Supervisor's position, but don't regret it for a second. I'm home with my DC almost FT now.

Re: Asking your boss to cut your hours
My coworker asked for 3 days a week after DS was born. This year, she asked again, but they offered 4 days.
