quick general ? re: Dishwasher and if you have a Hood
we need appliances. i like the lg fridge and gas range/oven, which is a normal oven with the temperature/clock display sticking up the back wall, but my husband likes the Slide In kind- meaning, without the clock & display thing sticking up at the back wall.
if you have a hood instead of a microwave, are you supposed to have a slide in oven, or can you use a regular one? (slide ins are more money, i think, AND lg only makes them for gas ovens, which means i now have to also look at different refrigerators
second question: we also need a dishwasher. i was told that the only company that makes them with the cutlery basket on the door is whirlpool. Is that true? so far, this seems to be true from what i see online but im hoping that this isnt the case.... like, i hope i have more options.

You can use a hood with any type of range or cooktop. Doesn't matter if it's stand alone or slide-in.
Whirlpool is the only dishwasher with the baskets on the door. That was a must for my mom and we looked at everything. She has a Whirlpool.

There are other brands with door-mounted cutlery trays, but they are definitely not easy to find....

Miele has some top tray cutlery racks.

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher with the cutlery basket on the door. I LOVE IT!! My DH was obsessed with that feature when we were shopping for dishwashers .... at the time I didn't understand why it even mattered (our previous dishwasher before we remodeled did not have it). Well, now I completely get it!

I had a dishwasher with the door-mounted rack, and I didn't like it anywhere near as much as the traditional baskets. I'm glad we got rid of that dishwasher and got one with a bottom shelf basket.

The basket on the door is the best.
Takes up NO room...leaves the whole bottom tray available for pots, dishes, etc.

The basket on the door is the best.

Of course the door tray has to take up room. A 3 dimensional shape has to take up space somewhere. They take it away from the lower tray, but you just don't notice it. The cutlery basket in the lower tray is removable, so if there are huge pots, you just pull the basket out and have more room than the same size dishwasher with the door tray.
We also have a lot of larger items in our basket, like serving spoons, tongs, etc. With the one that we had, and other pics I've seen, the large ladles and things wouldn't fit properly in the basket, either interfering with closing the door, or sliding the bottom tray out.
We're buying a new dishwasher pretty soon. Looking around just now for other brands with the door mounted basket introduced me to the adjustable top cutlery tray. Don't know if it's more or less practical than any other method, but it's definitely something I'm going to research.
I'm certainly not saying that door mounted baskets are bad, just that they aren't the end-all and be-all deciding factor in buying a dishwasher. A well configured dishwasher, with plenty of adjustable shelves can have much more space than a dishwasher with a door mounted cutlery rack.
And, if I find a dishwasher that has all of the features that I want, I still may wind up with a door-mounted basket dishwasher.
