cord blood banking
how many of you are doing this? I dont know much about it yet so im trying to read more about it online. just wondering what the average cost is and also what the annual storage rate is. is this something you pay to store for life and hope you never need to use?
just wondering thoughts? pros/cons?

Re: cord blood banking
I'm just starting to look into it too. From what I've read on here, it seems most people are not doing it and I'm wondering why. Seems like all it can do is help in case of a medical emergency down the road. So i'm wondering too if there are any reasons against it besides just being expensive.

Re: cord blood banking
I don't believe in it for spiritual/ religious reasons, plus the costs are not worth it in my opinion. I will be asking my ob to delay clamping the cord.

Re: cord blood banking
Not sure if you were only looking for opinions on people that did, but we didn't. Honestly, I did a ton of research on it and I couldn't find anything that really convinced me that the cost was worth it. It doesn't seem to be used all that much (despite what the banks seem to state). I have a college roommate who is a pediatric oncologist and she told me that if she had to make the decision today she wouldn't. That said it's very true that in 10 years the technology could be there, but then again there has been no long term research to show that the stem cells would even be viable in 10 years. All that said, I'm truly interested in the subject and changed computers in the last year and don't have the pile of articles on this one so if someone has some to share I'd love to read it.
We did do delayed cord clamping with our first and hope to do it with our second.

We opted not to do it, I also read up on it before making the decision.

Re: cord blood banking
We registered with americord. I feel like it's insurance you hope not to use. Many companies are quite expensive $2000 for collection and then $125 a year for storage. Americord was $2000 including 20 years of storage, which comes out to half of the major companies. Many of the diseases claimed to be treated with cord blood run in both our families including cancer.

cord blood banking
basically, delayed cord clamping is instead of cutting the umbilical cord right away, they wait anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes or even after the umbilical cord stops pulsating. There is a lot of blood from the baby still left inside the cord and some studies suggest that by delaying the cord clamping, the blood that is still in the cord is still transfused to the baby providing much necessary needed elements, like iron. Many in the medical community go back and forth on this but it depends on what your dr. will do for you as well. I would read up on it before going one way or another.

Re: cord blood banking
Crashing... I just had my baby girl in April and for months I really struggled with this same decision... After a ton of research, we decided against it. But I do recommend really looking into it and understanding the whole procedure and what they can do with it, and knowing your family health history is a must..
After my experience with my blood cord, the next go around we will do the same thing, donate our cord publicly... If you want more info, FM me. I don't want to start a whole controversy on here with my story and my beliefs but I can tell you my experience with it and what my doctor and nurses told me.
Good luck!
