Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I was actually pushed to give DD formula - i was trying to BF but she was losing weight rapidly and getting jaundiced. I was at LIJ. The LC worked with me to get my supply going (which ultimately never happened) and was not at all opposed to the formula supplementation.

Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I delivered at Winthrop. I was not given a hard time but had to get out of bed (csection) and walk the halls looking for a nurse on several occasions.

I told them once I planned to formula feed and that was it. No one mentioned BFing after that. There was always formula in the bassinet.
This was how it was the first time (Good Sam)
The second time they put 1 bottle in the bassinet and I had to walk down to the nursery for another every time. When DD2 was in the NICU- they always had plenty of formula. I heard the nurses in there say that everything (from formula to diapers, wipes, pacifiers, etc) was being kept under lock and key and being distributed more stringently because of budgets

I delivered both boys at Winthrop. Asked if I was BF or FF and said FF. Never asked after that, always given formula in bassinet.

Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I delivered at Good Sam and told them from the start that I wanted to BF and to not give DD formula or a pacifier. I asked to see the LC as soon as possible.
Long story short, DD was terrible at latching and I was not producing any milk. She lost a pound in the hospital and would not stop crying. The nurses and LC were great and would help me any time I called them in. I had a c/s and was there 3 nights. The second night I was there, DD would not stop crying...for hours! I gave in and gave her a pacifier. That same night we had a marathon BF session for about 5 hours (on and off but mostly on) and she was still crying and crying. Finally, one of the nurses asked me if I wanted to give formula because they were concerned with her weight. I gave in and the expression on her face was "Oh, this is what a full tummy is supposed to feel like".
The LC was very supportive. I cried after I gave the formula and the LC comforted me and said that not everyone can BF and suggested that I continue to try to get her to latch, pump and supplement. She said that with the shape of my breasts and the fact that they did not get bigger at all during my pregnancy was an indication that it would be very difficult for me to BF and produce milk.
The nurses gave me plenty of formula to take home with me. I continued to try BF and pump at home but my milk never came in. When it comes time for LO #2, I am just going to FF from the start.

spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I delivered at Huntington in 2011 and wanted to bf. But the first night I was so exhausted that had them keep him for the night feeding, no problem at all. I bf'd the rest of the time. It didn't go well but as a FTM had no clue. But I felt no pressure either way.

Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I delivered in Southampton.
When I got to the labor and delivery room, they asked me one time if I planned to FF or BF. I stated I wanted to FF, they marked it off on the card that goes in the bassinet and that was the last time I was asked.
The bassinet had drawers and in one of the drawers was always a supply of nursettes, nipples, diapers, shirts, blankets, hats, etc.
There was one very "natural" nurse in L&D with me. (I don't know how else to explain her, she was training to be a midwife.) She talked to me a little about why I decided NOT to breast feed...which, while in labor peeved me a bit. I guess that was her way of trying to persuade me, but I wasn't having it.

Oh I had one of those "naturals" when in L&D. She got annoyed at me when I asked when my epi woud be arriving. She gave me a look and said, "you have to wait for you LABS to come back first" I said- yeah that's great ,but I just need you to know that my Dr ordered me an epi and I want it as soon as possible." She said, but you aren't even in that much pain yet. I said- "yes and I prefer to keep it that way!" She didn't like it. She walked out after that and I never saw her again, thank God!

Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I am in Chicago, and where I delivered they did ask me if I was BFing….I said yes. However, the first night I was too weak and sick to BF my DD. So, they asked me if it was OK to give her formula in the nursery and I said yes and was super thankful for it. I tried BFing the next day and was unsuccessful….so she relied on that formula for our entire hospital stay…and then the 3 days it took for my milk to come in after we were discharged.
ETA…so to answer your question, they did not pressure me to BF, but asked first before they gave her the formula. And after that, it was simple getting formula. I just had to ask the nurse and POOF…there was our formula!

I delivered at NSUH.
I told them that I more than likely wanted to FF.
The first thing I was asked after DS was born was "Are we BFing?" to which I replied "No, I think we're going with FFing"
That was followed by the "You know Breast Milk is THE best thing you can give your baby" line, followed by the "The bonding expereince you will have with your child is like no other" line (I TRULY hate this one - so unless you BF there is no way to have a bond with your child...whatever).
After, having handful more nurses come in and guilt me about my choice to not BF, and which BFing class I wanted to attend, I gave in and said i would try.
They positioned DS on my chest and the entire time I kept thinking "this isn't what I want, why am I letting them tell me what to do with MY child".
The nurse left the room and I turned to DH with tears in my eyes to take him off my chest and get a bottle.
I was offeneded that they went that far after the amount of times I told them no.
I asked that it be written in my chart that I was formula feeding and to not ask me about BFing again.
The question should be asked once and the answer should be noted - no guilt or pushing should be applied regardless of which method the women chooses.
I replied earlier but this was the exact same experience I had, I was already hormonal and they made me feel terrible about my decision to FF

spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
My first DD was born in 2009 and they gave me a zillion bottles every day. My second DD was born the past March and they gave me two to last an entire day. I had to search out a nurse the day after my csection to get more.

This was my experience at Good Sam too. I always had a ton in the bassinet and went home with a ton with DS1 in 2010. With DS2 this feb I always only had only one bottle. I make big, hungry babies and I was constantly going to get him more. I was never pressured to BF though.
Honestly, whatever your choice is should be it. You make the decision and then you should be supported. These fights between BF and FF are ridiculous.

Re: spinoff- If you asked for formula in hospital
I was a little pressured and even tried it to Show the nurse my milk ducts don't work. She just wasn't getting it!
I had all access to the formula. I took full advantage.
