BF'ing at 15 mos
So, my DD is 15 1/2 mos old and I am still BF'ing. She eats full meals, but only gets milk from me, mostly at night before bed & in the morning (not to mention throughout-the-night feedings). Does anyone else still do this at this age (or past 1 yo)? How do you know they get enough milk when they are eating so many other foods?
I'm considering giving her a cup of milk during the day to be sure she gets at least 8 oz or so a day, but I don't want to stop BF or give her too much milk if she gets all she needs from me.

I BF until 19 months. There's no way to know 100% if she's getting enough milk, but at that age she should be getting most of her nutrition from food and if she's eating a well-balanced diet, gaining weight and growing appropriately and peeing and pooping enough then she's probably doing okay, whether she's getting a lot or a little from you.

Re: BF'ing at 15 mos
I agree with the above poster.
I BF DS until 22 months. After 13 months or so, he really was only nursing in the morning and bedtime. I stopped nursing through the night at 9 months and I dropped the bedtime nursing at 15 months or so. He never took to cows milk so he was only getting what he got from me. I made sure that i got enough cheese and yogurt into him. My ped was not worried that he didnt drink cows milk.

DS is 16 months and nursing a ton still. He is growing so I assume he is getting plenty of other foods and milk.

Re: BF'ing at 15 mos
DD is 16 1/2 months and still nursing although I wish she would wean because I'm pregnant and it's getting to be too much for me. She refuses cow's milk so it's not an option to give her a cup of milk. I've tried all other milk options but nothing has worked. I just make sure she gets a cheese stick every day and try to stick dairy in when I can in other places.

BF'ing at 15 mos
DD is 16 months and still BF. I started trying to give her cow's milk at 12 months and she wound just take sips and spit it out (which made NO sense to me since she would drink formula on occasion no problem). I just kept offering her a sippy with milk with her meals then sippys of water in between to make sure she was getting enough fluids. I personally felt around a year (maybe a bit after) DD started spacing out her BF sessions and I think my supply started going down. I was very concerned that she wasn't getting enough calcium and made sure she had lots of yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, etc. Over time DD got used to the cow's milk and started drinking more and more of it.
Around 14 months or so DD started drinking 5-8oz of cow's milk with her meals (usually) and I was very relieved. She now only BF when she wakes in the AM, before her nap and before bed. I think my supply is pretty sparse now so I think it's mostly for comfort. I'm also pg and hoping she weans before #2 arrives!

Re: BF'ing at 15 mos
Thanks, all. And, the 2 who're preggo & still nursing, so comforting! I'm not sure I'll wean mine or she'll wean herself b4 I get preggo again, & it's good to know others who are okay with BF'ing while preggo as well.
MY BIG CONCERN isn't DD not getting enough to eat/drink... it's the amount of calcium/dairy. I'm considering giving her 8 oz of milk other times throughout the day to be sure she gets enough, but at the same time, I don't want her to BF less b/c she gets that milk, so my supply decreases, so I have to give her more supplement, etc etc etc. Any ideas?

Why are you afraid of giving her cows milk? So what if your supply decreases - it will be replaced by the cows milk? We started DD on cows milk at 12m, and at 14m now we only nurse at night and sometimes in the morning. Are you giving her other dairy? I don't think BM is a substitute for dairy at this point.

Re: BF'ing at 15 mos
It's not a substitute for dairy... it IS dairy. But, I'm not afraid of giving her cow's milk... I just want to be sure she gets enough calcium (which is in BM) but not too much. I'm just curious as to what others do & if their babies still BF or stop when they start giving cow's milk.
