how early to arrive at jfk?
we are flying to florida from jfk (american airlines) and just wondering about how long before the flight departs do we have to arrive?
we plan on checking in online so we can skip the ticket counter.

Re: how early to arrive at jfk?
We usually do curbside check in so the ticket line isn't an issue for us either. It also depends on what day and time you are leaving. We usually get there about 1.5 hours- 2 hours before the flight. That gives us enough time to check in, go through security (which is the lengthy part of the ordeal), have something to eat, buy a book/magazine for the flight, and sit at our gate for all of 5 minutes before boarding begins. This is of course for two adults (yeah, I guess DH counts as an adult) so I'd give myself extra time if I had kids with me.

Re: how early to arrive at jfk?
It REALLY depends on the time of year and day. Our last 2 flights could not have been more different.
6am flight, Sunday of a college spring break week 9early March), got to the airport at 5am thinking no one was going to be there. We ended up upgrading our seats so we could get on the quicer security line (JetBlue) and we had to RUN to the plane.
8am flight to St. Lucia, Father's day. Got to the airport before 6. hardly any line. Through security in 10 minutes, waited leisurely for our flight after grabbing breakfast.
bear in mind this was the EXACT same terminal at the same time of morning and the same day of the week.
I'd allow at least 2 hours. I hate waiting in general but I'd rather be sitting at the gate reading than sweating on the scurity line

Re: how early to arrive at jfk?
definitely 2 hours...like others said, you never know. But I flew out of jfk at American a few weeks ago and the security line was crazy long! This was at 1pm on a Sunday

Re: how early to arrive at jfk?
I always do 2 hours before for domestic and 3 hours for international flights. I'd rather wait around then miss my flight.

As others have said, two hours for domestic flights. I fly pretty frequently (to FL) and its really a crapshoot...the same time and day but in a different week can be a completely different experience in terms of the wait at security.

if you dont have to check bags, then 1 hour is plenty of time.

Re: how early to arrive at jfk?
The times can vary greatly - so my personal suggestion is that you are better to be early than running and crazy and stressed out. With kids it can be a pain going through security and I found it took longer to go through with 2 than it did when it was just DH and I and we flew through. I would say I would get to the airport 2.5-2 hours before - this way if you hit large lines that is okay - but if you don't you can just walk your kids around and get a snack and let them run around.
Did you say Jet blue? If so they have a kids area if I remember correctly.

Absolutely not. See the post above about my cruise. If we hadn't paid an extra $70 at the airport, we would have missed our flight AND our cruise. As it was, we pretty much got on the plane as they were closing the door.
