Sensitive Topic -Weight and Flying
My family just booked a trip to Europe in October and I recently began to have anxiety - because one of my family members is very overweight- I am not exactly sure how much she weighs but it's maybe close to 300 lbs. She didn't buy an extra seat and I am afraid that when she boards the plane - it's going to be a problem and very embarassing and awkward. I am not sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice on how I can handle this situtaion?

IMO, it's not your issue to worry about it or bring it up to her. If they don't let her on the plane and she doesnt make alternate arrangements then that is on her and not you.
I'm sure she's already worried about it and having someone point it out isn't going to help the situation.

yeah its not up to you to worry about it. If she has flown before, then she should already be aware of how small the seats are and should have known to buy the seat next to hers. Will she be sitting next to family or a stranger? If it is family, an issue probably wont be made. If it is a stranger and the flight is sold out, they may have to bump her to another flight or they may make an arrangmenet with the stranger to be upgraded or put on another flight. Also, maybe she already contacted the airline and bought the second seat and didn't tell anyone?

How awful for her. Some airlines will charge half for the second seat if she buys ahead of time. Will any other family members being sitting with her? Make sure she gets the seatbelt extender as soon as she gets to her seat.

Re: Sensitive Topic -Weight and Flying
Thanks for the replies. We paid extra to have us all sit together so my husband thinks that it won't cause an issue since it will hopefully just be infringing on family and we of course won't say anything. My heart just breaks when I think about the potential embarrassment it might cause and I just hope that she is allowed to stay on the plane. I am not sure she's even thinking about this issue and I am too afraid to bring it up without hurting any feelings.

Being plus size myself, I can guarantee she has thought about it.
I haven't had to use one, but they have seat belt extenders that she can ask for when she boards the plane.

As long as the family member sitting next to her doesn't mind than there should not be an issue. However, just for her own comfort she should really buy 2 seats.

i totally agree with this. every plus size woman (me included) thinks about this when they fly. the seat belt fits me without the extender but sometimes i ask for it so i can be more comfortable. when i fly with my husband, we put the arm rest up between us (maybe who ever sits next to her can just do this without saying anything?) and there's no problem whatsoever. when i fly alone, i'm a bit more uncomfortable but nothing unbearable.
i hope all goes well!

Re: Sensitive Topic -Weight and Flying
I am SURE she has thought about this - Unless she has never been on any form of public transportation before - she has thought about it .......
Don't say anything - it's her issue.
