baby waling up at night to feed Q

My DS is 13 weeks, and he gets formula as well as BM throughout the day. I'll nurse him around 9:30, and he will sleep for a 4 hour stretch. After that he gets up every 2 hrs to nurse until he's up for the day between 8:30-9. He will nurse each time in the middle of the night for 5-10 minutes only. I decided to give him bottles during those middle of the night feedings to see how much he will take. He will only drink between 1-2 ounce each time.

Do you think that maybe he is getting up to be comforted instead of being hungry? Any ideas on how I can get him to sleep longer stretches at night? I know every baby is different, but I am thinking he may not be hungry in the middle of the night since he does t drink a lot at all..

If I don't feed him and try to get him to sleep he gets hysterical.

When my DD was a newborn she slept in the RNP next to our bed. When she woke I would give her the pacifier and rock her. If she just wanted to be comforted she would fall back asleep. I would try this for about 30 minutes (as long as she wasn't screaming, just whining) before feeding her.

I would feel if he is only drinking 1-2 ounces that its more of a comfort thing but I EP, so Im not sure if its different with nursing. We always did one formula bottle a day since birth. We gave it during the overnight feeding. We felt it filled her more and helped her sleep til the morning.

Yes. I think it is a comfort thing especially if he's only nursing for that a short a time. He should be able to stretch longer than 2 hours between those nursing sessions.

I think he's relying on the nursing to soothe him back to sleep. I would try a paci or rocking him. Maybe the sucking motion of a paci would help soothe him back to sleep.

I stopped nursing in the middle of the night when my twins started doing this also...waking up to feed for a few minutes before falling back to sleep. I tried the paci. It worked with one but the other had to be rocked and held really close to me (almost like I was squishing him) to get him to go back to sleep. GL!

Have you tried changing his diaper after he's done nursing? That way, he'll be more awake and may nurse on the other side too. That could help stretch the feedings a little more. I found that when DS1 had a longer stretch at night, he'd cluster feed more after that.

Ive tried that but he sleeps like a log lol. He sleeps right through the changing.
If I try rocking him to sleep, but will he stop getting up after I do this consistently? Last night from 2-6 he was up every hour Chat Icon Chat Icon
