Any tips? Any specific time of year? WOuld like to try to do it ourselves rather than pay landscaper.

You should be able to remove plants/bushes at any time if you are not replanting.
If you are moving them, I would wait until they are done blooming. You can probably look up on the internet what the best time of year is to move a particular plant. I think fall is the best time to move plants/bushes.

What are you moving? Bulb plants move really well, but ITA with PP, wait until after they bloom or them may not this year.
when you do move plants/small trees, fill the hole with water first and water the heck out of it for a week.
We removed a big bush a few years ago. We cut it back to a stump and chopped at the stump and roots a bit. We waited for it to die out a bit and then tackled getting rid of the stump

We removed all plants and bushes on our property ourselves. We didnt keep any. We did it in Spring. If you are just replacing it with grass I would wait until spring so you can lay sod or seed.
