Re: are hospital tours worth it?
IMPO, I thought it was worth it. I found out at 34 wks that I was delivering at Good Sam. I thought I was going to be at Southside. Well I had some fears delivering there, not b/c it isnt a fantastic hospital but, for personal reason. Anyway, all those worries vanished after I saw things first hand for myself. Plus, we asked a bunch of questions to the RN giving the tour that we never had thought of before.

i didnt think so. my tour at NS manhasset lasted 3 hours! i would much rather have slept.
eta: i would just go on my own to look at where the admitting office and make sure that they have your paperwork.

IMHO, just do it. You never know what questions other people ask that you never thought of and it's good to get your bearings.

I think so. If nothing else it's just exciting to see everything and it makes it all seem so much more real. I loved my hospital tour.

I loved ours. It was done during my L&D class though. I'm OOS but I don't know if it makes a difference. I already scheduled another hospital tour for this pregnancy (I think mine is when I'm around 35 or 36 weeks -- it's on the calendar because I don't remember at all).

If you skip it...
Remember to bring a copy of your paperwork for admitting- sometimes it gets lost.....I know mine did, and I heard it from others....
If you end up going after a certain time at night the main entrance is closed and you need to go thru emergency....

Do you need to do it - no.
However, for me, it alleviated some of the unknown that was coming with the delivery. I felt better seeing where I was going to be delivering, knowing their procedures, etc. Gave me a little bit more peace of mind.

I guess it depends on what type of person you are. I was (and am again) so excited to be pregnant and wanted to experience as much of it as I could. I took the Lamaze class at my hospital and had the tour during it. Was it necessary and did I really learn anything new besides visiting hours? No. Did I still enjoy the experience and would I do it again? Absolutely. Also, I think it did make me a bit more comfortable for the overall L&D experience.
An added benefit was the per-registration they did at this time. I'm not sure when you would do this otherwise and it saves you a lot of time when you actually come in to deliver.

I did the tour at Good Sam last week and IMO it was worth it, because questions came up that I would have never thought to ask and the nurse who did the tour answered some of the questions I did have.

Re: are hospital tours worth it?
crashing to say that i planned to but was put on bedrest so never actually did the tour. i did have to visit the hospital a few times for monitoring, however, so i was somewhat familiar with the setting, which made me feel better. i liked knowing exactly where admitting was when i needed it, ya know? but i also dont think its a huge deal if you dont do it either. big whoop, you ask someone to direct you where you need to go.
good luck!

Re: are hospital tours worth it?
I didnt do a hospital tour because I thought it would be a waste of time. I think I called them about pre-registering and they mailed me the paperwork which I mailed or faxed back. I dont think my DH would go on a tour, LOL. We had no problems on the day I delivered but I was induced.
