are there some styles of houses that never have a basement?
Or does it just depend on the individual house? I have been seeing lots of ranches that don't have basements - is that all ranches? Most of the houses that don't have basements have the washer and dryer in the bathroom or kitchen and I really don't like that.

well, all the levitt houses have no basements.
Now some closer to the water on the shore lines don't always have basements because of flooding.
Some may not have a basement, but they may not be underground, kinda like a highranch. Highranches don't have basements.

then you have some high ranches that are kinda halfway underground.....

Some splits have that config too..no basement but half underground..most people use it as a den or family room.

I think all the Levitt houses in Levittown don't have basements. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard!

Re: are there some styles of houses that never have a basement?
after looking at houses for 9 months in Suffolk and seeing at least 80 houses, I can honestly say, there is no rhyme or reason.
I have seen just about every type of house (except for a splanch) and some had basements, some didn't.
I guess it was up to the original builder.

Agree.
Also, I live in a ranch and there's basements. As a matter of fact my neighborhood is 99% ranches...with 100% basements.

Of all the houses we looked at in N. Carolina, only one of them had a basement. Most of the houses we looked at were new construction and I was told that they don't put in basements because it's cheaper not to.

That's our house. We have a hi-ranch where the lower level is half underground. But no basement if you want to be technical.

The Levitt houses in Levitt don't have basements. Some in Levittown do have basements but they are called miller capes not levitt capes.
I do not have a basement. No desire for one... My washer and Dryer is in a closet next to the bathroom.

Re: are there some styles of houses that never have a basement?
Can I ask why a basement is so important to people? I am just curious because i have a completely irrational fear of basements so I am wodering why everyone else finds them so appealing..... Is it for storage? To make an extra family room type space? If it were up to me I would lock the door to our basement and forget it existed!!!!

I need either a basement or a garage. for storage. Both would be great, because you can use your basement as a family area -

LOL I agree with you. They freak me out! but I never had a basement growing up. My DH on the other hand did. He would have liked to have one for whatever reason but we liked our house to much to pass it up

Its a PITA to store in an attic. My house has a full attic, and im scared im giong to fall thru the house! it would need to have a finished floor, alot of attics dont- and my access is thru a closet, so its hard to get up there.

We have a crawlspace that goes the length of our house in our upstairs on both sides of the room. My DH who had a basement and swore we needed one to store stuff was AMAZED at how much we can fit in there. We filled 1 half the one side and the other side Completly empty. You'd be surprised how much Junk you can fit in there

That is what ours will be - and FH can do whatever he wants down there because I will RARELY ever step foot in it!!!!! my parents have one. it is not a full basement (meaning the exact size of the whole main level of the house) but it's pretty big! it's the size of their kitchen, living room, dining room and the sun room. their basement has a laundry room (pretty large size) with a HUUUUUUGE walk in cedar closet for off season clothing storage, my dad has a big workshop down there and then there is a large space which is mostly used for storage, like all my shower gifts it's a very nice extra space!! I wouldn't mind having all that extra space on top of the house.

Re: are there some styles of houses that never have a basement?
We don't have a basement now, but would like to have one in our next house. We have a Levitt cape and we have completely filled our eaves. There is plenty of space in them, we are just packrats!
But I don't think of it as a necessity. Just a "nice to have".
And one of my downstairs bedrooms is a Laundry Room where my washer/dryer and slop sink are. I don't need the bedroom right now anyway so it works for me. And I still have 2 rooms that can be bedrooms before I need to resort to that room.
