WWYD - discussion with Auntie about Carseat vs Booster
Ok folks, help me handle this before it becomes an issue.
Auntie: So when can we put AJ into a booster and take her out of the carseat? Me: Well, the carseat you have is still good for another 30lbs before AJ officially outgrows it. Auntie: well Ruben (my uncle) has a friend whose son is 3 and he’s in a booster. Me: Um Auntie: so we figured that a booster would fit into his (my uncle’s) truck so we can have one in there for her. Me: Well I think the 5pt harness on the carseat is better than a booster for her right now. Safer, ya know? Auntie: OH ! did you hear about that accident…. (fill in conversation here about a really bad accident here that took the life of a child. The driver didn’t realize a Semi pulled over on the side of the road wasn’t moving, miscalculated, side swiped it and took out half of his car. Killing one child (the younger child in a carseat behind the passenger seat), and seriously injuring himself, while the 4yr old girl on the driver side was remarkably uninjured. Sad, tragic, avoidable accident) Me: Uh-oh, My phone is ringing….[I am at work for this call] Auntie: Oh, ok go, go, talk to you later
I’m fairly sure this will come up again. Much like “turn her around” discussions we had for feels like forever. She stayed RF after 2. Difference is the age (time for blah blah) from RF to FF was much shorter than what is bound to be for Carseat to Booster.
So what can I arm myself with?
AJ will be 4 in a month and a half and is less than 35lbs

I am sure there are many statistics out there for why the 5pt harness is safer than the booster. I'd find those and give them to her. Would she switch her to a booster without your approval? Or if she's so insistent, you can get a booster with a 5-pt harness like the Graco Nautilus.

Re: WWYD - discussion with Auntie about Carseat vs Booster
I think there are few, if any boosters that are safe for children under 40lbs. I'd leave it at that for now.
DD is almost 5 and still in 5pt harness and will continue to be, probably for a few more years as long as she us under the height and weight restrictions for her seat.
She argues once in a while that her friends use boosters but I simply explain that this seat is designed to save her life and I want to keep her as safe as possible.
Frankly, I think we should all be in 5pt harnesses and everyone but the driver should be rear facing but that isn't a likely redesign from the car companies.

You have to use the LATCH system when using the 5pt harness, you have to disconnect LATCH when you use it with the seatbelt.

pretty much what i would say
if she is to ride with your aunt and/or uncle, she must be in a 5 pt harness, because YOU want it that way. Doesn't matter what little johnny down the street does. YOU want YOUR child to be safe. end of discussion

I agree 100% everyone should be in a 5pt harness. Its really not ALL that insane.
My aunt is 72 and won't go against my wishes but will definitely do that 'thing' where they show their disappointment and disagreement with your decision. She'll talk about it constantly, then move it to "well Ruben" and start blaming the hubby. I will know its gone too far when she *WILL* go buy a booster "for later" that's when I'll probably need to put a foot down.
Hey on a side note, 4 more weeks to get my kiddo back. I think I've been good about not complaining about anything this year! I've also been super busy and work, stressed from family issues and last heard my name is on the chopping block at the office soooooooo prehaps my mind is elsewhere? *sigh*

I agree. I just moved my DS into a booster, but he is over 50 lbs and was too tall for the 5 pt harnass seat he had. I tried out the Nautilus and one other one and he was too tall for those 5 pt. harnasses too, so I just switched to the booster. If he wasn't so big, I would have kept him in the 5 pt harnass longer and wouldn't care who said anything about it.

This actually depends on the weight of the child for my seat. In the owner's manual it says to stop using LATCH with the 5 pt. harnass once the child hits a certain weight and switch to the seatbelt. If you are specifically talking about the Nautilus, then I may be wrong.

I know she is 72 and they do think they know it all at that stage but its your child and your rules. Be firm, stand your ground and say " I believe she is safer in the pt harness so that is why I am keeping her in there" then ask her how the weather is.

Ill be honest. I don't think you should let her bully you. Its VERY hard when we have family that always think they are right.
Tell her you were curious and spoke to your Ped about it. The Ped said "5pt till 33lbs, period".
But don't be bullied to spare HER feelings.

No you don't (at least not the first part). Where did you get this idea from?

There are also some boosters that use the LATCH to keep the booster seat tied down, so it won't become a projectile in an accident when not in use. It isn't to keep DC in the booster any better, but it is still used at the same time as the seatbelt. The seatbelt is what restrains DC.

Re: WWYD - discussion with Auntie about Carseat vs Booster
If she wants a seat for your uncles car I would go out and by a car seat you feel comfortable with that will fit AJ and fit in his truck and just give it to her. Say, that you remember she mentioned it and figured you would pick it up.
I feel like leaving it like that, she may go out and buy one on her own.

This is what i say too. For some reason Aunts and grammas always think the dr knows best about everything.

If you can't tell her NO and not worry that she'll do something else behind your back, she shouldn't be watching your kid.
I don't care if she brings it up every day for the next 3 years. It isn't her call.

I agree and the next four weeks would be terrifying for me. I would be on my way to pick her up. Eta :that's just how I would feel doesn't mean you should. 4 weeks is a long time away and you not being there who knows if she will do it ... Sometimes old school way of thinking is if moms doesn't know it won't hurt her :(

WWYD - discussion with Auntie about Carseat vs Booster
Just tell her that the Pediatrician association and NHTSA say to put the kid in a harness until they outgrow it, and not to move to a booster until 5,6 or 7 (whatever age you want to use) because they learned from accidents that younger/smaller kids were getting hurt more often in boosters and that the harnesses were giving more protections
As for her referencing other people, maybe refer back to the lessons that our elders taught us about not doinng stuff just because others are ("Well, just because Sally jumps off a bridge doesn't mean you have to...)
With reference to the death in the accident, if pushed I would say the truth: Not all accidents are survivable and properly used restraints (carseat/booster/seatbelt etc) give us better chances in survivable crashes.
As to the LATCH comments, -you can not use LATCH and seatbelt together for a harnessed seat -there is no requirement to use LATCH over seatbelt for installs. The recommendation is to use the system which you get a better install with. Proper install is always king. -LATCH installs must be switched to seatbelt installs for harnessed seats when the weight limit of the seat/vehicle is reached (usually around 48lbs for most seats/cars) -Some boosters do allow the seat to be latched when used in booster mode. This is of NO benefit in a crash, it is solely for protection of occupants in the vehicle when the booster is unoccupied (projectile)

They are safer - you can "blame" the pediatrician and say he thinks its safer.
