How do you go about correcting grandparents??
My FIL is originally from Sicily. He has been in this country for a long time and can speak english just fine ( with an accent) and read in english.
Last night my DS asked him to draw pictures of things he likes.. airplanes etc. DS is learning how to spell and picks up on these things VERY quickly. He learned how to spell a few words after telling him only 2-4 times. My FIL is very proud of DS and wants to help him learn so under each picture he would print the word of what he drew. But he was spelling everything wrong He put " Erplane" for Airplane for example.
He is such a sweet good hearted man and means well and was so proud of himself and his grandson that I didn't have the heart to correct him but I know I need to. Any suggestions on how to do it without hurting his feelings?

Honestly that might hurt his pride. In the future, I might label paper with the words that your FIL and DS can draw together. This way the words are spelled correctly and they still get to have the bonding experience. You can explain to your FIL that these are the words you are working on 'this week'

That's what I plan on doing. I'm asking my MIL and my dad to speak to Luca in Italian when they can. I would love for my son to be able to speak a second language. It's unfortunate that our parents are off the boat, yet Dh and I don't speak a lick of Italian.

They speak to him in Italian all the time and he understands everything they say and says some words/phrases in Italian back to them but since we are just starting out with the spelling I really don't want to confuse him just yet. As soon as he is a little more comfortable with it and gets the hang of it then we will introduce Italian to him. Thank you

Re: How do you go about correcting grandparents??
I kind of think that his mistakes are really lovely things to remember him by, my grandma always pronounces things wrong and used to call my husband JoJo for some strange reason...they are wonderful things that make us laugh and think of her in a really fond, funny way. I love my grandma and those little foibles. I would just revel in those little Malapropisms and enjoy! They make for great storytelling in the future!!!
ps, isn't malapropism a big word??? I used it!!!!
