Strangers DC hitting?!
I was at the beach today with my DC (11 months) and a boy around 3 came up to my chair and hit me and my DC. The parents (both were there) finally saw him and said he's at that age and walked him away. No sorry, nothing. I'm a FTM and really am looking to learn from this, WWYD? As the "hitters" parent I would have said sorry at the very least, just curious how you would dicipline. TIA

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
I would have apoligized, told my DC that it was not nice and had my DC apoligize also, but not all parents are like that.
I had a child in our mommy n me play group that constantly hit my DD all the time. He would corner her and start smacking and hitting. His mom would just pull him away tell him no, then go back to chatting with her friends. no apology or sorry to my DD.

Strangers DC hitting?!
I find that so annoying! There is never an age where it is appropriate to hit random people! Sure, kids may go through stages but when.you brush it off like that you are essentially telling the child it's okay to hit. My baby is still young but i would have absolutely apologized and i would have had him apologize as well.

I agree! Parents should teach their children at an early age hitting is not ok. I just want to learn from the situation.

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
Totally not okay and at 3 he should have a good grasp on right from wrong. My son will be 3 later this summer and if he dared to hit another child he would get a stern talking to plus he would have to apologize to the child and I would apologize to the mom.
DS gets a time out if he hits his sister or pulls her hair.

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
Thanks ladies, he also hit me a few times. It was awkward because I wanted to say stop or no but I looked to his mother who said nothing Just expected her to disipline or do something!? Since I'm not his mom I did not say anything. She looked at me and said hes's at that age, I still felt it should have been handled better.

Since he did it more then one, I would have had no problem telling him to stop... In a nice way... The parent should have put a stop to it right away. Maybe the kid needs to hear no from someone else. A smack once or twice, is one thing, but to keep doing it, would have made me say something. It is hard when it is someone you don't know...

Strangers DC hitting?!
My DDis 11 months also and some boy (probably around 3) pulled on her hat to try to knock her down when we were at a park. His mother was standing right there and didnt say anything! I pulled his hand off of her and picked her up and said "dont push her". But he tried to kick her as i was picking her up! I just walked to the other side of the playground but the mother never said a word. Unbelieveable.

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
this topic really gets me mad....it's happened to both my kids on more than one occasion....i have no problem with reprimanding someone else's kid that is harming my children in any way, AND ESPECIALLY if that parent is doing NOTHING.....so i've reprimanded the kid in question nice and loud, with a disgusted tone and wait for a reaction from the parent most of the time its "oh I'm sorry, and timmy you don't do that" out of embarrassment for not being the one that dealt with their child 1st....but sometimes i get the parent that says absolutely nothing or looks at me like i shouldn't have said anything to their kid....thing is i'm waiting for the day when a parent that is not doing their job by reprimanding their own kid, decides to say something to me and that's the day all hell's gonna break loose....because I will have no problem saying something along the lines of maybe if you did your job other parents wouldn't have to

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
If the parent was there and said nothing, then *I* would have said something. "Oh, it's not nice to hit. You could give someone a boo-boo." If that didnt stop him AND his mother still didnt come over, then I would say "I do not want you hitting us and you should say you're sorry..."THAT should get his mother moving
DS is not a hitter but on the rare occasion it has happened, I have his that hitting is not nice and that he must say he is sorry.

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
I have had no problem telling other children to "stop that" or "no" if they are doing something that could hurt my 11 month old.
I feel like if the parents arn't there to stop it then I sure as hell am not going to wait for them to wake up and do something. If they have an issue with me protecting my child then we can discuss it.
Stay on top of your kids.

Re: Strangers DC hitting?!
I have no problem telling other kids not to do something. Even those that I don't know. It's kinda a natrual thing for me, maybe b/c I taught in daycare for a few years then taught first grade for a few years.
Recently at the park, another kid went to go push my dd, or actually did push her and I said " please don't push" It actually "scares" the kids you don't know. They look at you like "OMG, she said something to e" and usually run away. I'm protecting MY child. If you don't discipline or correct your kid that's your problem, but I do. \
DD is only 2 and even though she can't say sorry yet, I would say it, explain we don't hit to her and if need be a time out.
I can't believe that happened to you. Such a crazy parenting world we live in sometimes.
