Breast pump recommendations?

Ive heard Medela is great but our insurance won't cover a pump and they're so expensive. Did anyone go with a different brand and are you happy with it? Baby Bargains says that the Ameda purely yours is a very good choice so we registered for that but it got mixed reviews online so now I'm not sure.

Breast pump recommendations?

Can you rent instead? I rented a medela for the first month (the symphony) and it was the best of the best. My hospital actually uses an ameda one (they had me pumping in the hospital too) but a hospital grade. If you're going to be paying out of pocket, it would definitely be good to rent at first and make sure BF is going to work out before you spend a lot of money on a pump. Just a suggestion. I can't speak as to any non-rented pumps so I'm not a lot of help, sorry.

That's a good idea, thanks! Do you remember how much it cost to rent from the hospital?

Re: Breast pump recommendations?

I didn't rent from the hospital, actually, I rented from a separate local company nearby. My hospital only had ameda pumps and I wanted to rent a medela symphony. It was $65 / month or $180 for 3 months, or $3 a day (I just checked on their site). I'm out of state, though, so where I got mine won't really help you, but that's a general idea of the cost to rent. At the hospital itself, having the pump in the room was just part of the whole hospital bill and it was all billed through my insurance same as everything. I think renting a pump is tax deductible, but I'm not sure where or how that works. The same place has the ameda elite for rental for $45 / month. (That's what I was given in the hospital.)

Nothing ever worked for me, though. I was one of the 1 - 5 % of women who apparently don't get a milk supply after having a child. No one could ever tell me why, but the OBs and LCs concluded it was probably hormonal and related to why I only get my period a few times a year. But I pumped around the clock after nursing and feeding for weeks trying to make it happen. The symphony was amazing! I can only imagine if I'd had anything less powerful, I would've kept doubting that I was trying my best.

Ameda is rated well by LCs.

Are you going back to work right away or will you be a SAHM? If you don't get it at your shower and you'll be home for awhile, you really don't need a pump right away. Renting is a great option too. I had to rent one for a few weeks b/c of some initial issues. I think it was about $75 for the month. I rented it through an LC.

I'll be a SAHM so we don't need one but we really want one because DH wants to be able to feed the baby too and we only want her to have breast milk. So my plan is to pump so he can feed her a couple times a day too.

$75 a month to rent seems like a lot. It seems like for the price of renting for two months we could just buy the Ameda. Although I don't know if it will be worth it of breast feeding doesn't work for me. I think if we don't get it as a gift we'll prob wait a week or two after I give birth before buying it.

Re: Breast pump recommendations?

Do you have an Flex Spending Acct? If so you can use that towards a pump!

I am thinking of getting the Ameda too and have heard great things!

This seems like a good deal and is def priced better than the Medela.

http://www.amazon.com/Ameda-Purely-Yours-Breast-Pump/dp/B000ME3146/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1341117839&sr=8-2&keywords=ameda

Or they have an option for $137 without the carry tote which sounds even better as far as price if you are trying to watch $!
