NPR-What to serve guests visiting new baby
Relatives have started calling asking to stop by to see my newborn son (5.5 weeks old). If I arrange for them to come around 1 pm, what am I expected to serve them? Lunch or light appetizers? Please give me your ideas - I've never really entertained

I would serve them a drink and thats it! Hopefully they will bring you lunch! Or some baked good or something. Its pretty cheeky if they turn up empty handed!

We used to put out bagels etc and fruit salad (store bought)
But that was because most people came by in the late morning.
For 1 pm- I'd just put out some snacks.
No need for a big lunch or anything- you have a newborn- people don't expect it.
Or you can get bagels and maybe some tuna salad and/or eggsalad?

We used to put out light snacks - something store bought.
Seeing that they are visiting a newborn, I would hope that it would be other way around though and they bring something. The last thing you really want to do is to have to prepare something for entertaining when you've got a new one in the house.

They usually brought food, my MIL was there for a few hours when people came and she served coffee and water etc

Tney shouldn't expect you to serve anything. They should be bringing you food.
I offered beverages and directed them to the kitchen to help themselves

I would put out some snacks, an appetizer or two, nothing fancy. You have a newborn, they should be taking care of you. But I am an OCD hostess and I would feel terrible if I had nothing to offer them. So have a few drink options, a few snacks around and then your good!

i just always made sure i had chips and salsa in my pantry..thats about it..
they usually offered anything else if anything!!

I never had anyone visit and not bring something. We would offer water and coffee and that was about it. There was always an overabundance of goodies that visitors had brought.
Maybe have a bag of chips or pretzels ready just in case and if you really want to be safe, some bread and cold cuts.

serve nothing, i would never go to a new mom's house and expect to be served food, if anything when people came over i ordered if it was lunch or dinner time

This is what I was thinking too. Right now you are still adjusting to a new baby..you shouldnt have to deal with feeding guest. If anything buy some chips and soda..

Oh eff them if they expect to be served. Have drinks in the fridge and if you have chips or whatever, put them in a bowl. Anything beyond that is NOT your responsibility.
