I need some words of wisdom from BTDT re: Tying Tubes

I am PG with #2. We recently found out it's a girl. Our DS is 5, so we'll have 1 of each.

Ever since my first OB appt at 8wks my OB has been asking if I want to tie my tubes (since I will be having a repeat c/s he can do it then).

DH is a strong supporter off it (has been since I got PG), more so after finding out we're having a girl.

I'm mostly against it. I think I am afraid of the permanent part of it, along with one of my BFFs had her tubes tied (at her 2nd c/s) and has horrible AFs & cramps (never had before).

I'm terrified of worse AFs and cramps - b/c I have ALWAYS had bad AFs unless on BCP.

Can you give me any feedback on tying tubes - AF before vs after - What alternatives are there, beside BCP, the Depo shot and IUD.

DH isn't opposed to "getting snipped" but I too am afraid of the permanent part of it.

I am 37 and "should" be done, but I don't know that I am.

TIA

First of all, don't make this decision while you are pregnant, or even 6 months after if you are not sure. You need to be in a clear mind to make the decision and not on pregnancy hormones or post-birth stressed. These can affect your decision.

If you do decide that you are done, I would look into the Essure procedure. I swore up and down that I would not be the one to get the procedure after having 3 kids, but once I read up about it and asked around, it was a simple decision. Totally painless! It is 100% irreversible, so make sure it's the right thing for you.Chat Icon

so funny that you posted this today ....because my dh and i were talking about this last night.....my thought process is that if we have a 3rd child that would be 3 major surgeries (3 csections).......3 major recoveries.....and I'm a sahm that has to do it all with no help from him or anyone else including during recovery time sooooooo the least he can do is get snipped......especially since like you said the af and cramps do get worse and i have always had really bad periods to begin with i don't need it getting any worse.....and i have also heard of other complications with the tubal worse than a guy getting snipped....i told him even if we do have the third I'm not comfortable with doing it and thats that......definitely educate yourself on the tubal process and if you're not comfortable .....its your body....remember that

I always knew I wanted 2 kids and that was it. Sex didn't matter 2 was all I wanted. The moment I found out I was pregnant I told my doctor to tie my tubes.

My periods have always been out of whack and I've always had horrible cramps. They might have gotten a tad bit worse but in the 3 years since they wer tied, the pain has lessened.

They have a procudure called essure

iPad posted before I was done.

As I was saying essure! Doesn't require them to cut you open like a c section. It's a coiled that is placed in your tubes.

i was 10000% sure after my third that i was done. I talked about tying my tubes the entire pregnancy. I delivered at a catholic hospital so i knew i was going to have to go back post pardum and get it done. By the time the baby was born i didnt want to have another procedure so i went with the mirena (IUD). It turned out to be the wrong BC for me, but in the meantime, i decided i wanted another. Im happy i didnt get them tied, otherwise i wouldnt having my 4th.

funny you should post this because I am preggo with #2 and will be my second c-section (plus I have a blood clotting disorder) so I really shouldn't have another. My hubby and I both agree that we are done but for some reason I am not sure on getting my tubes tied just seems to final.

and now I am hearing AF can get worse I think I am swaying toward not doing it and using some other form of birth control.

PS hubby doesn't want me to do it because he feels with our luck I will be the 1% with the complications with something or another.

Re: I need some words of wisdom from BTDT re: Tying Tubes

I got my tubes tied after DS #2. I have two boys and I'm 36 years old. I really wanted two kids but always assumed the 2nd would be a girl and that I'd tie my tubes. Well when that wasn't the case and I was expecting another boy DH and I toyed with the idea of a 3rd baby. However, as time went on i realized that I didn't want a 3rd child. That while yes I wanted a girl ultimately a 3rd wouldn't guartunee that and I nor my DH really had it in us for a 3rd child. I couldn't have been any happier to tie my tubes when I had DS #2. I couldn't fathom being the mother of 3 under 3 or a mother of a newborn at around 40.

Fast foward almost 9 months later, every once in a while I wonder if we shouldn't have tried for a girl. However, when I look at our life with our boys and how I really feel I know I made the absolute right decision in typing my tubes. I couldn't have handled a 3rd pregnancy or child with my boys so young and I didn't want to have children later than what i already had my boys...both DH and I just don't have it in us for a 3rd.
