Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
I WAS taking OTC Prenatals from while TTC until just recently. My OB faxed a Prenatal vitamin in for mail order which came out to $100! I just think that's a lot. I want to just continue taking the OTC ones I've been buying for a fraction of that cost.
I checked the labels from the samples she gave me in the office to the ones I bought at my local drug store; and they're the same.
It's ok to just continue taking the OTC ones instead of buying the expensive prescription ones right?

i did the same thing as you - my Rx ones were $45 per month and i refuse to pay that much.
I've been taking the Nature Made +DHA ones and am paying $20 for a three month supply. And like you said, it's got the same things in it

Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
Unfortunately medco automatically processed the order AND shipped it so I have no choice but to pay the $100 for the 3 months. I had been checking online to see the order since last week Friday and it never came up as available. I only saw the $100 when I checked my bank account this morning! So i will take the expensive prescription ones for the 3 months; and then switch to my trusty old OTC!
Crazy how expensive they are through prescription!

Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
My doc gave me a prescription that my insurance didn't take. I called the office and they said OTC was fine to take. I just took them to my next appointment to show her and she said they were fine. It's a cvs brand prenatal with a DHA supplement...

Trader Joes brand OTC. They look like horse pills, but they're the only ones that didn't make me nauseous! My midwife said they're fine.

Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
I only take prescription because my deductible is met for the year and it's "free." My OB said it was up to me which I wanted to take. I take a vegetarian one with DHA that is the only type that didn't make me sick out of the giant bag of prescription samples my OB gave me.

My prenatals are not covered by insurance. The prescription my doctor gave was over $100 a month. I ended up asking if they had a generic brand and luckily they did- for only $20 a month. Maybe one of the prescrptions also has a generic you can get.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
Usually the only difference is the amount of folic acid. It is usually 800mg in OTC and 1000mg for perscription. Good luck.

I was told make sure it's a prenatal with iron. Mine is chewable and doesn't have iron so I take an extra iron supplement.
Folic Acid is a B vitamin which is water soluble. What the body doesn't use gets peed out. So I wouldn't pay extra to flush it down the toilet!

Prenatal Vitamins...Precription or OTC?
My dr was okay with me taking OTC. Some people use the prescription because their prescription copay is cheaper than getting OTC

I take these too, my insurance copay was higher than just buying OTC. I'd love to know where you get these 3mo for $20 though! I've been paying $14 for 2 months!

Same here. Funny enough, I just got a new bottle and notice they're much stronger tasting than the old bottle I have. I take them before bed so they don't make me sick. My doctor said they're fine and it's up to me if I wanted a scrip or not.
