Can obgyn give me anything to take the edge off before cs?
I asked my doctor this question and he said absolutely not. I feel like I have read that some people are given something to calm them down before a c section but I may be mistaken. I had a bad experience last time so I am starting to get very worried about the surgery. I will probably start crying and shaking with fear when I arrive at the hospital. I don't have anxiety or anything but I am not big on medical stuff and my first section was not typical.....
Thanks!

Since you already know you're anxious, it would definitely be worth talking with someone professionally about it and seeing if they can give you some other methods of handling the anxiety in advance (like meditation, information, etc) so when the time comes, you'll feel calm and ok with it. Most drugs that would help you as far as anxiety goes are passed very quickly to the baby and can cause dependence at birth, which is why they don't do it. But there are other coping methods for fear/anxiety/panic that are extremely effective that you can learn! It'll be ok! I don't know why your doc didn't mention these sorts of alternatives when you inquired, but I'm sure you can find some local support groups or a support person who will be able to help. Feel better!!

Re: Can obgyn give me anything to take the edge off before cs?
I had an emergency c with my dd#1 after a decently long failed labor.....I cried all the way to the operating room.... I honestly believe that I had a panic attack for the first time in my life on that table....they had to give me oxygen because I wasn't breathing right and even with that I kept saying that I couldn't breathe.....I somehow controlled it so that they wouldn't put me under and then I wouldn't be awake for the birth.....
when I was about 5months pregnant with my dd#2 I started having what I could only think was anxiety/panic.....I would wake up not able to catch my breath and then I would have to walk around the room trying to control my random thoughts and anxieties about the upcoming scheduled c-section......what helped me was that I talked to my doctor about it.....he said that he wanted me to write down all the things that made me anxious and that we would walk through every one of them on the list and see if we could change or make those things better at the time of the section.....he listened to everything and during the surgery he was so accommodating and i felt so much better anxiety wise because of it....try talking to your doctor about what things will make your feel more comfortable.....for instance I hated being flat on the table because i have sinus issues and i felt that that could've contributed to why i felt i couldn't breathe during my 1st csection so they propped my head up more and i didn't like the curtain being that close to my face because i felt a little claustrophobic so they pushed it further away from my face...things were addressed better and I had a better experience anxiety wise because of it
things will work out!

I was really anxious before my csection with DD, and my doc gave me like half an ambien to help me get some rest before the surgery. I think it still had some effect as I was kind of groggy going in, which weirdly helped with my nerves.

Your doctor sounds great! Glad you were able to relieve some anxiety.
I wanted some valium before getting the spinal because I was very nervous about that, but I was told no.

Ihad an unplanned cs after 24hr plus failed induction. Thing is I get panic attacks. So I kept asking for something and they said no way. Now in my case I had the worst one of my life on that table and when they threatened to knock me out even I was able to pull my shhhhiiit together for a few minutes. U can do it!! Good thing is they do knock u out aftet seeing the baby lol xo
