BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
What are the hospital gowns like?
My hospital provided a packing list and they said they provide gowns (but you may want to bring your own). I was just wondering about them. I know some people find them horrible- but what about them make them bad? I don't really feel like going out and finding gowns to bring, so I'm trying to find out if I will be OK in their gowns.
Also, the only other clothing they suggested was a bathrobe, slippers, underwear and something to leave the hospital in... Is there any clothing item you found necessary/essential to have while in the hospital?

Hospital gowns are your typical, shapeless smock that ties in the back. You'll be wearing that for at least the first 18-24 hours after you give birth.
When I had my first, I wore the hospital gown for the first 2 days. My delivery really knocked me out and I could barely move so changing into my own clothes wasn't even a consideration until a few days had passed.
With my second I was counting the minutes until they took the IV out of my arm so I could shower and change. #2 was a much easier pregnancy/delivery/baby..
I used their underwear because a whole lot of nastiness is going on down there and you don't want to ruin your own.
The only thing I truly found essential were my clothes to go home in.

Re: BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
a hospital gown is typically a basic cotton piece of clothing like a very larges shirt dress, with an opening that ties shut in either the front or back. They're very large and shapeless and made for easy access to all parts of your body. It's what you want to wear while in L&D because of all the sweat/bodily fluids that can be flying around I think people generally don't like them because they're basic utility clothes and they don't want to wear something that has been worn by other people. Me personally.. didn't care and would rather mess up the hospital clothing than anything of my own!
after you deliver, you want to wear whatever you will be most comfortable in. I wouldn't suggest anything with a tight waistband. Bring some tanks, sports bra or tanks with built in bra's, loose fitting yoga pants, slippers and maybe a robe or something to keep your arms covered as it can get chilly in there. You will be in and out of bed so i'd wear whatever you might lounge around the house in
They provide towels for a shower, but they're like small hotel towels, so if you want something larger, you can bring your own. You could also bring flip flops for the shower as well if you want.

The hospital gown is just fine. To be honest, it's the last thing on your mind once there. If you bring any of your own clothes, they will get destroyed by blood and other bodily fluids lol. It's very hard to move around the first day or 2 so bring super baggy comfy clothes and cheap granny undies so that they can hold in the pads and everything else you will end up stuffing down there (like ice packs!!!!!!).
I didn't really need much at the hospital. I used their towels, pillows etc. You will just need shampoo conditioner soap. It's not a hotel, they don't provide those lol

Yep, ITA. The gown will be the last thing on your mind. I did bring a gown that I wore the few days I was there but honestly, the hospital gown would have been fine too. I found the most useful things for me were: my own undies, slippers and a nursing bra (if you plan to breast feed). My hospital did provide soap but def. bring your own shampoo and conditioner and tooth paste :)

BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
My hospital gown was kinda fancy with snaps on the shoulders and in front for easy bf access and not open in back. Not sure if it's because my hospital had a separate birthing pavilion, maybe. It was comfy and good since I bled all over everything while there. I didn't change into my clothes until I was going home (only 2 days, mind you) but I did shower each day. I'm in my hospital gown on my family pic on my profile page on here.

Re: BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
I had an unplanned c section and wore the gown for 24 hours post surgery. I was so drugged up and in pain I didn't care and I don't think I could get changed due to that even with nurse assistance. The next morning a nurse had to help me get dressed, not fun!! I wore my own sweats,, tanks and tshirts after the first 24 hours. I woildnt feel comfortable walking around hospital with gown and they make you walk after a c section.

BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
I had planned to wear the hospital gown for at least the first day after delivery if not the entire time. I also figured I'd at least try out the disposable underwear they provide that everyone talks about instead of ruining mine. I had my bag in the car (as instructed by the hospital) while I was in labor and by the time I delivered and got to my room it was 5am. We had been up all night, we were both exhausted, it was raining out and the car was parked far away. I told DH to just go home, get some rest and bring my bag back later.
When I went to take a shower after DH left I asked the aid for underwear, a gown and soap. She looked at me a bit odd and told me they don't have any underwear, she could find me some soap and she'd have to go "hunt down" a gown for me. She wound up having to go to a different floor for a gown. Apparently I'm the only person to not be fully prepared with clothes and toiletries in that maternity ward. I had to hold my pads in place with a plastic chuck, which didn't work so well. Next time I will expect to use all my own things and will make sure my bag gets to my room right after I do!

Re: BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
with ds I had a c-section and I wore there hospital gown for the first 24 hrs and then when they take all the stuff out iv/catheter and when they make you get up and walk around I cleaned up and I wore a nursing gown and robe and I paired it up with loose pajama pants from Kohl's Vera Wang they are soft and loose (my mil bought a size up for me and was perfect)
for my first c-section I wore the hospital's panties drs/nurses are constantly checking you. (I was in St. Charles) I am hoping Stony Brook offers the panties (I will bring my granny panty's from home just in case)

Re: BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
I was only in the hospital gown the day I gave birth. The following 2 days I wore yoga pants and nursing tanks. I also wore them to leave the hospital. I made sure to pack comfy underwear in a larger size and slippers.

Re: BTDT- hospital gowns & clothes
the gown they gave me for L&D was different than the ones they gave me on the maternity floor (NS LIJ). the L&D one was better. i was in that for the day i gave birth. then i switched to theres the next day. i ended up putting my own clothes on after that. i bought oversized PJ pants from old navy so they were loose enough to be comfy, especially if you end up with a c section. i used my own underwear cuz i just felt better. i had bought a pack of hanes granny panties and i brought flip flops
