Tips on Renting a Car
Any tips? I've never rented a car before. I just did the online rate quote and Am I better off booking it ASAP or do you get a better deal if you book it closer to the date you need it?

I always get the best rates via priceline. I put in a ridiculously low bid and see what happens.
Also, if you're a AAA member you get a discount code to us at Hertz. Some credit cards give you discount codes as well.

You can mix and match rates. There are tips over on Mousesavers.com they apply for MCO BUT the theory and the tricks are the same.
Do you have - Costco? BJs? Entertainment club? AAA? Etc? I have mixed their codes with the coupons from the actually company. You have to play around a lot but it usually works.

How does priceline work? If I put in a price for $20per day...how do I know if I got a car company to agree to that? Do you have to sign in and give them all your info before they let you know if your rate was accepted?

You will get an email back or get notified right away on the website that a company has accepted your bid. You do have to put in your info right away but you can specify what kind of car you want, etc. I've put in seriously low bids and they've gotten accepted. The last time was for a quick girls weekend in FL in March. I put in a bid for $10 a day for a compact car, which was rejected. I put in a bid for $11 a day and it was accepted by Alamo (right at the Tampa airport with a return to the Ft Lauderdale airport).

I also recommend Priceline.com and have found you get better rates the closer you book.
I put in a low bid about 3 months before my trip and got rejected (I put in $14/day) and about 1-2 weeks before my trip, I got an email with lower prices so I tried again, and my bid was accepted.

You can't pick on or off airport locations can you? I.e. can you put in for MCO and get only the companies that are on site or do you run the risk of having to take the shuttle off property?

It's both on our off property - the times I've used it, we got a car through Enterprise off property.
I usually book through BJ's or Costco - I find Alamo typically has the lowest prices when you book online and their prices tend to go lower closer to the date of travel.

I always end up originally booking with Alamo but then last minute get a much cheaper deal with National. Just wondered if it was worth trying Priceline sometime - but we were spoiled with ME, if I rent a car again with the girls, car seats etc I really want to be on site so I don't have to go as far - it is so easy to just walk across to the parking garage and pick your car out.

Re: Tips on Renting a Car
Where are you renting? For how long? That seems very high. Prices have definitely gone up from when I rented last but I priced out some for August a while back and I was getting $400-600 which was a LOT more than I paid in the past and FAR out so no discounts. Who are you pricing with?

Hertz is usually more expensive. You can always book and rebook again as you find a better price
