Doing an extension - where to start?

We are thinking about doing an extension to our home. Where do we even start? I am not sure if we shoudl look for an architect or a contratcor first. I would like to know our options in terms of the actual structure of it as well as what it will cost. Any advice is appreciated! Also if anyone has any contractor or architect reccos, that would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Hire an architect first. He/ she would be able to direct you to a contractor.

ITA. Our architect gave us a list of several contractors that he knew of, for several projects. A benefit of that, is that he's seen a trend of the contractor, not just a single occurrence from one person who's used them.

Would you recommend your architect?

Re: Doing an extension - where to start?

we actually used a design and build contractor who did the concept sketches first and then priced it for us. After we signed the contract than we used their architect to do the plans.

We priced it different ways and this worked out better for us. I didn't want to spend $5k-$7k on architect fees only to find out that we couldn't afford the project. Personal preference I suppose.

How do I find a design and build contractor? I feel like I want some sense of overall cost before we shell out $ as well

Thanks!

I'm in NJ, otherwise I would recommend the company we used. We sourced contractors from some personal references from friends but we ultimately found this company through service magic and checked references and BBB. Some of the contractors worked using the same model of concepting first. Others needed us to get our own architect.
