Is there a fool proof way to burp a baby so that you get a burp out of them EVERY SINGLE TIME?

My baby is so hard to burp. After 30 min or so of burping, I usually want to give up but then he cries from the gas pains.

My friend learned a method from the Nicu nurses but its sort of hard to explain. Basically you sit the baby on your leg facing your other leg. Lean them so they are sort of draped on your front arm but upright. Take your other hand put it on their side and wiggle their torso side to side in an up down motion, sort of like you are trying to have them dance...Told you it was hard to explain!

Are you putting pressure on his stomach while you burp? That was what worked best for us.

Switching positions seems to work best or lightly bouncing with him on the yoga ball. I understand though, if I don't get a burp, the gass pains are horrible. So I just keep trying.

I learned a trick in the NICU that worked like a charm. We called it the Axl Rose dance. Hold your baby on your lap facing you and move their body in a side to side snake-like motion. If that doesn't work, flip the baby on their belly and pat their back and if that doesn't work, do the Axl Rose thing again.

DD didn't have gas issues but I found that just sitting her up nice and straight would usually get a burp out of her.

Putting DS on my shoulder never worked. I would sit him on one leg, bend him forward a little and then pat, well more like thump. If that didn't work, I would lay him on my legs, take his legs and bring them up (like making him look like an "L") once and then sit him up and burp him. That usually did it. I definitely think position changes work the best.

I usually sit her on my thigh and bounce/jiggle my leg a bit while patting her back and usually works. Changing positions a few times helps..

As far as gas pains, Colic Calm helps my DD tremendously. I give her a bit and then lay her on her back and pump her legs like bicycle and also push her knees to her chest. Usually works to get gas out of her pretty fast. If anything, it settles her stomach.


eta: i lean her forward when shes sitting on my leg too. I think it helps put pressure on her belly

I learned at the hospital to sit her on my knee and rotate her upper body in a circular motion. It look/feels weird, but it always worked.

I was taught something totally different from our nurses LOL So I guess no, there's no 'fool proof' just what works..


For us it was to craddle her head in one hand using our thumb and forefinger to brace her jaw. put her on our knee hand bounce her while moving her top body around in circular motions, all while using my other hand to thump on her back. So bounce, rotations (like imagine bending over and to the side and back and side then front) all while thumping on her back. She burped most times.

As she got older that holding hand craddled her collar bone. I obviously never held her tight enough to choke her just to hold her head stable and her throat straight.

Thumping and or rubbing in long deep motions all the way down to her hips and back up to her shoulders.

I sit DS on my lap, with my hand under his chin holding his head up (he's almost able to do that himself now). I pat him on the back. In times of severe gas, I actually lay him on his back and take his legs and sort of push his knees up to his belly. That gets him to fart more so than burp, but its a gas relief nonetheless!
