Gardening- Shady flowers?
So I want to start gardening in my itty bitty patch of dirt outside my house. I think it would make a big difference and it'll be a fun project. My mom is into gardening so she's going to help, but she gave me the task of coming up with what kinds of flowers I'd like to plant.
The only problem is we have a large evergreen tree in our front yard. This is my great aunt's house and she planted that tree when she first moved in. So taking it down is out of the question. My mom assured me that it's fine, there are flowers that thrive in the shade. I couldn't name one if you held a gun to my head. I did a bit of a google search and the only ones I've ever heard of are Impatiens and Violas. Any other shady flowering plants you can think of? Perrenials would be better, naturally, but something with minimal upkeep. I'm a newb at this gardening thing. TIA!
ETA: I'm also told Geraniums are good shady flowers.

What about some hostas? I dont know if there are different types, but I have the ones where the purple flowers grow out of it. Those come back each year and do well in the shade.

I was at the garden center yesterday and saw these really pretty begonias. Apparently, these particular ones do not like sun so I couldn't get them. Sounds like an option for you. I wish I had asked the woman who helped me what variety of begonia they were! They were gorgeous, though.
