question about taxes when merging bedrooms
if we merge two bedrooms into one large bedroom, would our taxes go down at all?

It would have no effect at all. Unless you're changing the square footage of the house, or adding a bathroom to make say a master suite.

ours did not - they actually tried to increase our taxes because we had a building permit - they said we added square footage.
however, i was able to fight and lower it because - i was able to compare houses with less bedrooms - because MSLLI is not clear on sqaure footage - you can atuallyy compare to slightly smaller houses on the same lot size - similar style house

You're decreasing bedrooms, so this isn't a factor for you, but for anyone thinking of splitting a room into two bedrooms, at least in the Town of Islip, the septic system is based on number of bedrooms. An increase in bedrooms may require a septic system increase.
