stripping a refinished tub and restoring original?
We had our tub refinished twice and both times it peeled. Now, its looking bad and I just want to get back to the original tub which I probably should have just left alone in the first place. I dont even know if its possible to do, but did anyone have this done that could recommend someone? Thanks!

Re: stripping a refinished tub and restoring original?
We had a tub that was peeling.. and we asked around quite a bit about re-glazing it... everyone i talked to said don't bother it doesn't last, etc...
We ended up using Bath Fitters ... i really didn't want to, but since we did it when we first moved it we couldn't take on replacing the tub. (didn't have extra tile, money, time etc..)
As far as getting back to the "original" finish? not sure you can... I've never heard of it being done. The problem is that when the tubs are manufactured the coating is baked on... so unless you plan on pulling the tub out, having it coated and baked, which at that point it would just be cheaper to replace it... i highly doubt you will get to the "original" finish again.
I would LOVE to be proven wrong here because i would love nothing more then to rip out the Bath Fitters thing and get back to a original tub.

To reglaze a tub, you're *supposed* to etch the original tub surface, either with muriatic acid, or with an abrasive (sandpaper). If they did that, you really can't get back to the original surface.

Agreed..Forgot about the etching process.
Also, several years ago they changed the chemical makeup of the glaze. Something about the old one was causing cancer or some BS (lol) ... thats why the new ones dont last as long any more.

Re: stripping a refinished tub and restoring original?
ugh..thanks for the input though! I dont want to replace the tub (its cast iron and $$ to take out and plus we live in a coop so wont be here forever) but its peeling soooooo bad. The middle of the tub is almost all peeled off which is why I thought I could just get someone in to take care of the rest
