I'm not one to spend a day with the amish. but you should try the restaurant good n plenty. It's family style and authentic.
you can also hit the crayola factory on your way home

I am going there in a month. Where is a good, but affordable hotel to stay in? We have 2 kids so we would like at least one bedroom with a living area. I am pretty picky.
Thoughts?

I would do Hands on House, it's a cute museum. I don't think you need the entire day to do Thomas the Train and Strasburg area...there isn't much there. A couple of train museums, which I heard are pretty lame. There is mini golf outside of Dutch Wonderland which is fun, and free with your ticket.

Choo Choo barn is fun. We usually eat lunch at the red caboose motel. The restaurant is a train car and you can see the Thomas train go by.
Eden Resort is a great hotel. They have suites with separate bedrooms.

Re: For those that have been to Lancaster...
We just went this weekend to Lancaster. I definitely recommend the Eden Resort! A little pricey, $175 a night for a Junior King Suite with AAA, but worth it. The grounds are beautiful, the breakfast buffet was great (extra $10 pp), and pools were the best! We spent our check out day at the kiddie pool with all the sprinklers and wadding pools. Check them out. If you run out of activities or it's too hot, you can always hit the pool.
Eden Resort
We ate at Miller's. It was good. Coupons on the website. Basically a big buffet. Cute shop and wine shop next door.
Miller's
Kitchen Kettle Shops was fun. It was HOT when we were there. They have some animals across the parking lot. You can pet them and have a pony ride for $5. Kind of a rip off but...
Outlet shopping was the name of our game. The Rockvale and Tanger outlets are great. Parking at Tanger is near impossible though.
Have fun!!!

Re: For those that have been to Lancaster...
We went to the Please Touch museum in Philly on our way home. We spent a few hours there, and it was really nice. The exhibits are new and clean, and the place is spread out, so the kids aren't on top of each other. You can bring your own food in and eat in the huge center lobby area at tables they have set up. We are planning on going there on our way home from Lancaster.
I'd like to check out Cherry Crest farms, but their website says they aren't open during the week until July. Bummer for us, since we're going back to Eden/Dutch Wonderland be going before then.
Iron Hill Brewery in Lancaster is really good for dinner. It's a big place, great food, good atmosphere. It's not a kids restaurant, but it is family friendly. There were a lot of families there, so we didn't feel uncomfortable if my DS got fussy.

Re: For those that have been to Lancaster...
How old are your kids? We just got back yesterday from Lancaster. We have a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old.
Our agenda was:
Day 1-Amish stuff (Kitchen Kettle, Bird in Hand Farmers Market), outlet shopping at Rockvale, dinner, Walmart run (we got to Lancaster around lunchtime)
Day 2-Railroad Museum of PA (has a great kids section), Toy Train Museum (eh), (we skipped Strasburgh RR because we did the Thomas ride in the fall and I didn't think DS would sit for 45 minutes on the train)--Done by lunchtime, went to lunch, Tanger outlet shopping. Then we went to Dutch Wonderland after 3pm for Preview hours from 3pm-6pm. Honestly, we finished all the rides our kids could go on in those 3 hours. Dinner, and back to hotel for evening.
Day 3--Dutch Wonderland in the morning, mainly for Dukes Lagoon. A few rides and out of there by 1pm for lunch. Then headed home.
We really didn't need the second day in DW, but we wanted to do the water park. I really like splitting it up that way.

The Please Touch museum is great! And if you have a LICM Membership it's reciprocal.
I love Iron Hill Brewery as well.
We did Cracker Barrel and Willow Valley Smorgasbord this time. Willow Valley was terrible, Millers is much better. We stayed at the Doubletree at Willow Valley so that's why we tried it.

Homewood Suites is a good option.

Re: For those that have been to Lancaster...
we are going for our third time in a couple weeks. Here are some things we have done that we really enjoyed!
Strasburg (wine tasting and excellent ice cream) http://www.strasburg.com/Strasburg-Creamery/ 1 West Main Street, Strasburg, PA 17579 Winery – open till 5pm Ice Cream Store – open till 9pm
Mount Hope Winery and Brewery – open till 6pm http://www.lancaster-gallery.com/gallery/hours.html 3174 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, PA 17505
#1 Must do - Soft Pretzels! Best ever!!! Countryside Road stand 2966 Stumpton Rd, Ronks, PA 17572 *Also on this route there are some amish/menonite owned quilt shops and furniture shops. I highly suggest you do drive the back roads. This is where you will find the best authentic shops.
Kitchen Kettle Village - kinda tourist trappy, but fun to walk around regardless. Also across the street there are a couple excellent furniture stores. The stuff is priced very very well - keep that in mind if your in the market for anything.
eta: you could probably do all the above in one day assuming it is not a sunday.
