Rash under rings - what to do?

Both my engagement ring and wedding ring are platinum. I've been wearing both for close to 8 years.

In the past 2 months, I've developed a nasy rash under my rings - blistery, itchy, red, swollen.

I have stopped wearing my rings for a week or so to let the rash clear up, I've sterilized them, had them professionally cleaned. Withing 2 days of putting my rings back on, the rash comes back.

From what I've read a platinum allergy is pretty rare, so I don't think it's that.

Has anyone had trouble with this as well? Should I go to the dermatologist? I miss wearing my rings!

Re: Rash under rings - what to do?

I had this start happening to me when I had been wearing them only 3 months! It's my wedding band. Basically it's either an allergic reaction to the copper or nickel in the ring (mine is white gold) or because water keeps getting trapped under the little diamonds. I don't know how it works with platinum, but I have my ring dipped once a year and that seems to do the trick.

Same thing happens to me. Go to a derm. I use a lotion called Bethamethasone Dipropionate and it helps it a lot!

Same thing happens to me and it's usually because of water trapped under the ring and the rubbing. I take all my rings off at night and make sure I put on lotion to help out, otherwise, it gets red and itchy and flaky.

Have you changed hand soaps recently? This happened to me when I changed to Dial foam hand soap. I switched back to the other stuff I was using and after a while it went away. Take your rings off to wash your hands and make sure they're dry bfore putting them back on. Also, take them off at night and use a good lotion.

Always take the rings off when you wash your hands. Rinse and dry well then put the rings back on. This should help

Re: Rash under rings - what to do?

This started happening to me with my white gold rings about 6 weeks after my son was born. Soon after I noticed my ears were infected as well. I developed an allergy to something in metals post partum. I can only wear pure sterling silver or yellow gold. No wht gold, no platinum, not anything dipped....just ss or yel. gold. It's a such a pain because I only own a gold wedding band so now I have to sell all my jewelry or get it all dipped in yellow gold.

Re: Rash under rings - what to do?

This happened to me after I was already wearing my rings for almost 2 years. A friend told me it was probably the soap sticking to the inside of them and just the moisture. Now, after I was the soap off my hands I take my rings off and rinse them off really well and then dry my hands before I put them back on. I have not had any issues since I started doing this.

This is happening to me too. I had to wear my rings on my right hand because of the nasty rash that developed. I've been putting Eucerin/aquaphor on the rash and it's clearing up pretty quickly!

Re: Rash under rings - what to do?

I would go to the derm. I would also ask if taking Benadryl when it is very bad would help. Benadryl for one night has knocked out some reactions that I was having for weeks.
