Help dress me for my new job
I am starting a new job and want to freshen up my wardrobe. I work in NYC at a PR firm and the job is now a senior level position. I have been at my current position for 5 years and "grew up" here but don't know if my clothing reflects that necessarily - esp. since our dress code was "tastefully casual" which meant we could wear jeans any day. I want to buy a handful of reasonably priced items to help me get started but I need some inspiration. What would you buy?

This!
When I went back to work after a year and a half off, I went back to the same field (media) but in a company that was more "business casual." My prior job was completely casual, so I only owned jeans and never had to get dressed at all. The first thing I did was go to NY & Co. and buy clothes that were more versatile and more professional looking (I seriously look like a college student going to class everyday even though I was a financial professional). I bought things that were more tailored and fitted.
I also found Banana Republic to have great things and they always put stuff on sale.

I would buy some basics - black pants, white shirts type stuff until you see what other people are wearing.

Re: Help dress me for my new job
Thanks all! Maybe I just need to hold out until I get there to get inspiration because I am less concerned about WHERE to shop and more about WHAT to buy when I get there. I tend to walk into stores and get overwhelmed and walk out when I have no idea what I am even wanting or looking for.

Re: Help dress me for my new job
I buy lots of dresses. I work in a corporate environment but I refuse to wear drab suits everyday.
I shop at Loft, Ann Taylor, J Crew, and Banana for the most part. I also have some basics from Theory and there is a sample sale this week if you're interested. I think it starts tomorrow.

I would buy good basics and concentrate on finding cool accessories and shoes to change up my look.
What do you typically wear now?

Re: Help dress me for my new job
I was thinking of going the accessories route to spice up what I have already. I generally wear dresses or jeans (skinny or trouser) with cardis/blazers. I shop BR, JCrew and Ann Taylor the most but admittedly have too much Old Navy and Target in the mix right now.

i was going to suggest this as well. i think with the warm weather coming ~ make sure you have good clean basics and just a good mix of bracelets/scarves/earrings to dress things up/down. a good blazer is always good to have as well.
also - i tend to wear a lot of maxi dresses in the summer when its god awful hot. that may be a good option for you.
good luck in your new role!

Another point - you don't know if the office is hot/cold...this can change what you wear to work.

I think finding some interesting tops (either with a pattern or texture/details like ruffles/sequins etc.) to go under the blazers and cardigans along with inexpensive jewelry (whatever you're into - I like cuffs, big necklaces and crazy rings for myself), scarves and belts will take you far.
I get stuff like this anywhere from Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off Fifth, Lord and Taylor, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 (almost always with some kind of sale and/or coupon).
Have fun shopping! Congrats on your promotion
