Can you get highlights AFTER JHS (like one year)

I have been getting JHS once a year for many many years.

I only do single process color.
I was considering some Caramel color highlights but the last time I had JHS was about 9 months ago.

Can I get highlights now (assuming I am not going to JHS my hair this summer).

I know no highlights first but what about after???

I dye and highlight bf and after jhs but I have really thick hair and have never had problems.
