Trip to Rhode Island: anyone been?
I am looking into Rhode Island as possible destination for Memorial Day Weekend trip. Anyone been there with the kids and willing to share their experience? Where you stayed, what you saw, where you ate, how everyone liked it?

we went to Newport (we don't have kids). I loved the town. Reminded me a bit of Portland. We did the maniosns, went wine tasting, checked out the shops. In the summer there are some beaches nearby and I am sure you could take some boat trips.

I go to Newport every summer. I've also spent time in Westerly which is a more laid back, beach town.

I stayed at the Hotel Viking, a nice hotel with a pool and proximity to the water. There are lotsa B&Bs so you may want to check them outt, but if you're driving, make sure to find out if there's free parking 'cus hotels do and can charge you for that. :P
I consulted with tripadvisor.com before going and went to some of the recommended restaurants. Nothing really comes to mind right now so I guess none of the restaurants I visited made an impression.
Definitely visit the mansions (Breakers, Marble House and The Elms are lovely) and take a scenic walk along the Cliff.
Have fun!

Re: Trip to Rhode Island: anyone been?
we went last fall, loved Newport!!! don't have kids.
we stayed in a Ramada in Middletown (prices in Newport were just too expensive) and its so close to drive into Newport (like 15 mins!). well worth it.
we did: ghost tour of Belcourt Castle (tour given by the OWNER herself!) It's at night and scary as hell but we loved it. Belcourt=owned by the Belmont family of racetrack fame.
did the entire cliff walk omg. don't be fooled by the beginning, its a very advanced hike. i laughed at a chick in flip flops struggling.
went to the Touro synagogue. Beautiful.

I have been to Newport but never with kids and not sure how much there is to do with them.
I think they would be bored with the masions.

Newport is beautiful.
My favorite is Block Island (which is Rhode Island).
