Why did you see your PCP and not your OB?

Why did you see your PCP and not your OB?

I had an appt for a physical...and so i just was talking to my doctor about everything going on and gave her the details. I have an appt with my ob end June for my annual. But based on what other ladies have posted in the past, i do not want to try fertility treatments/medication with my ob...i would prefer to go right to a RE so i was hoping my pcp would be on the same page and shed some light on the situation.

I have to disagree with this. It could be DH and not you. You should have him tested as well. Also, sometimes there is no reason. It's called unexplained infertility. Everything can be fine but, its just not working. You have to go with your gut. It seems like you feel something isn't right. I would trust your instinct.

hmm didnt think about it being a male issue. how do i go about getting a SA for him? does he just call his urologist or does he need to see a RE?

JMO but your OB would be better to advise you on when to see an RE rather than a PCP.

Re: how long before seeing an RE

To answer your original question, I was TTC for a year and a half before my first RE consultation. We started TTC in Feb. 09, got PG in May 09, and had a very early m/c. I figured that was a fluke, so we kept trying. I had long cycles, so we had less opportunities to try than you would have in a year. I went to my OB for an annual visit at the end of April 10, after not getting PG again, and mentioned my concerns. She gave me a script for bloodwork, a HSG, and a SA for DH. We couldn't get my stuff done during my next cycle b/c we were away at the time the tests had to be done. Then, I ended up getting PG again...and having another m/c. At that point, I made an appointment for the RE. I definitely waited longer than most people, but since I had gotten PG so quickly in 09, I figured I would get PG again with no problem...I was wrong!

Additionally, I strongly agree with the other ladies who suggested discussing your concerns with your OB rather than your PCP. In all honesty, PCPs know very little about fertility issues. Mine told me to "relax and it will happen." Nope buddy, I have a genetic issue and needed IVF!

I agree with this, because my general doctor knows very little about fertility as well. Actually, I recently was seen by a hematologist who did not know what a perinatologist was. Like- she didn't know what kind of doctor that was. I was Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyway.... while I do agree to talk about it to your OB, don't be discouraged if they say to just relax... Go with your gut.

I had a history of PCOS as a teenager. At the time, my doctor told me I would need fertility drugs down the line. Well.... by the time I was ready to start trying, I was seeing a different ob/gyn and he said to just relax.... and that all teenagers have period problems Chat Icon

Well ... I waited just 2 months after going off the pill.. I temped and used OPKs and realized I was not ovulating....

So, basically about 2.5 months after going off the pill, I was sitting for a consult with Dr.Braverman. I am VERRRRRRRY glad we got started when we did.

Also one final thought.. the problem doesn't necessary just fall in YOUR area... DH could have an issue going on .. Just some food for thought! Chat Icon

OMG that your dr didnt know what a perinatologist was Chat Icon

You ladies are def right about a gyn knowing more about fertility issues...since that falls into their field.
My pcp said today (which i NEVER heard before)...that your ovaries are basically sleeping while on the pill and so it may take a while to wake them up and get them full functioning. when i told her i have a somewhat regular cycle and that I do ovulate based on temping and opks she said that doesnt mean anything. i am still so confused by that. this month tough my LP was only 9 days...so that can be a sign of a lp defect which i am sure my gyn will know more about.

how would i go about getting DH for a SA?

Good that you have been tracking your cycle to know you regularly ovulate.. and what your cycle length is like. It always helps having some info going in ....

Your DH would go for an SA with a script from the RE.

I was afraid to mention to my DH that he would need one. I thought it would freak him out......

Well, he was totally cool with it... did it like it was no big deal... and everything ended up checking out just fine. The problems are ALL on my end. I am 60 inches of 100% infertile fun Chat Icon

i think DH would be on board with it...we would just have to go to a RE then...which means waiting til i see my dr in June and getting her to refer me. he is going to call the dr soon to make an appt for some routine bloodwork, ill have him ask about a SA - maybe they can give him the script?

He could always ask and find out... I'm pretty sure your OB could give you a script for that too.

OR....

You could call your OB's office and mention you will be in for an appt in June. Suggest if they could give you a script for him to get an SA ahead of time so when you have your appt, you have the results already.

Sometimes it could take a week or two to get an appt at the lab to drop off for an SA .. and then it takes another week or two for the results, if I remember correctly... It's been a while since we did this..
