Help with azaleas!!!

Dh planted some things in the front of our house (finally) and it seems the azaleas on the left(in pic), specfically the pink one.. is dying after only being planted 1 week!!!!

They have been watered twice/day; and do not get direct sunlight the whole day (which the men at the gardening store said that they couldnt)

Is it the temp drop? The massive rain we got Sunday? Something we did wrong??

We just spent so much $$$ on these plants/trees/flowers etc....I dont want everything to start dying!!!

please help!

Re: Help with azaleas!!!

when you say dying, is it the leaves or are the flowers just turning brown?

The azaleas you have were from another area and/or forced to bloom so they sell better at stores. Mine are not even open yet but very very soon...

Anyhow, the flowers start dying about 1 week after they bloom so if you see brown but it's on the flower part it is normal since the blooming until the die period is only about 2 weeks for the entire bush. And they have prob already been sitting at the store for 1week before you purchased them.

If they really are dying:

1.) azaleas don't like standing water. Are you overwatering with all this rain. my ground is still wet.

2. a lot of big box stores allow returns of dead plants even if your at fault for killing them.

Re: Help with azaleas!!!

The flower petals have dropped; and those that havent are shriveling and turning brown.... some leaves as well.... but mostly petals...

it also seems the plant is shrinking in width... (if that even makes sense)

I dont think its been over watered....I mean we got a lot of rain Sunday; so they ground was wet.....but not like puddles and pools of water KWIM...

I woul;dn't worry too much yet. New plants always take time to adjust to a new environment. And it sounds like they are doing normal azalea replanting activity. Wait and see. Plants that are dying start becoming bare of all leaves/flowers very quickly. And the whole thing turns yellow-y. See if your store will accept returns.

OMG Ours are doing the same thing. DH is furious! We've never planted them before so we were wondering if we did something wrong. Maybe they don't take well to being transplanted.

Here's to hoping they come back full force next season!

Re: Help with azaleas!!!

Ok; so went home yesterday and took a closer look.... stems and leaves are still very green; its just the flowers dying....So Im guessing their bloom is over- which stinks since they are the only "color" in my beds....

Azaleas and the other plant you have (forgot name) is also an evergreen. I have both in my flower beds. And though they are nice, they are back border plants.

Your garden should be like a symphony and have something going on for the whole year with exception of deep winter. I am a crazy gardener- can't you tell? Anyhow, think about planting annuals for instant, all summer color. Your front beds are not huge. And I usually buy flats of annuals (about $12 each) for my front only. Your front is not huge and 1 or 2 flats will do. I would choose impatiens since your front looks like north facing. And b/c azaleas are plants that are suppose to be mostly shade areas.

Good luck. The front of a house is so important--curb appeal and all. Makes you feel great pulling up to your house.
