If I had a sister, yes. I would replace or boil the heck out of the pieces (it its even possible to do this).

If you arent comfy w/this have you contacted Edgepark to see if a pump is covered? I got my pump for $37.

I am using a "pre-owned" breast pump...my SIL's. I am buying all new valves/shields/tubing though, so just the mechanical part is used.

Hmmm…I’m not sure if I would, to be honest. I think there’s certain things that shouldn’t be recycled. I don't know much about cleaning pumps, but do they make solutions to clean and sanitize all the parts?

I would on these conditions:

1- If I couldn't get it covered otherwise (like through edgepark) and had to pay full price

2- If I was sure that all of the parts and pieces could and would be cleaned and sterilized fully and correctly.


Maybe someone can bump the old edgepark post for you... but basically, you go to edgepark.com and set up an account. You put in all of your insurance information and home address and then call them up and order over the phone the pump you want (because they don't list the medela pumps on the website but will order them for you over the phone). They will then take your insurance information and verify it and figure out what they can get for you. If your insurance needs doctors approval, they will also contact your doctor for you and get them to sign off on it. I was worried my doctor wouldn't say it was medically necessary but she did. I ended up getting it for $18!!! It shipped in 4 days. and there really is no catch... you can call customer service who is great and talk to them at any time to check in and they will tell you what is happening and what your insurance says. They will not make you pay in full for it. They will only send it once you pay for it, so you should try and if they don't cover it, you don't have to buy it- no obligation, but if they do cover all of it, theyll send it or if they cover some, theyll say what your copay is and let you pay for that before they send it!!!

yes, i got the actual pump from my sister. i got an entirely new set of parts though (tubes, valves, membranes, shields, bottles)

Even before you register on the site, just call. My insurance doesnt cover it so I just registered for it.

YES why not just replace everything
Im getting mine from a friend....replacing all the valves, tubes and what nots...all the parts thats the milk goes through will be new

I would. You can get all replacement parts- tubes, bottles, membranes, shields, etc. It's only the battery part that's really be recycled so why not?

Now, I would only borrow it from someone I know. I wouldn't buy a used one from a stranger, and not because of the sterilization factor (obviously for reasons listed above) but because with my luck, they would tell me they never used it, and they pumped 5-8 times a day for 12+ months and it would kick the bucket when I started using it and would need to buy a new one anyways.

I think if it was my sister I might consider it, but i would still be afraid of bacteria that may be lurking in the mechanics of the breast pump

Yes. I would buy new tubing, shields and membranes, etc. I used my SIL's pump for my first child.

Yes and I already purchased a used one from a friend. I purchased all of the new parts for it so essentially all I am using is the motor part of it which the milk does not touch. I asked my doctor and told her I would be replacing the parts, she said it's totally fine. After I purchased the parts someone told me she actually used a pump at the hospital and they gave her all the parts to take home with her since they cant reuse them and they fit her medella. If you get one that is used I would say to hold off on getting the actual replacement parts until you see if you can get them from the hospital, unless you think you will need to pump right away. Or maybe get them and just not open them and keep the receipt.
