How do I know if cheese is pasturized?

Hubby just bought sharp cheddar cheese (the block) to shred up for my tortilla soup. It doesnt say anything about being pasturized. The ingredients say it's made with pasturized milk... any ideas? Chat Icon

I think that's okay, especially if it says it's made with pasturized milk. It's more about avoiding soft cheeses.

It's illegal to sell cheese in America that is not pasteurized. That's what I heard anyway ...

Cheddar is a hard cheese. You only need to worry about soft cheese (brie, feta, etc). If they're made with pasteurized milk (many soft cheeses sold in the US are made this way), it's pasteurized. Stay away from ones made with raw milk.

cheddar cheese is absolutely fine.....aged cheeses are definitely pasteurized and of course like you said, it listed pasteurized milk as an ingredient so as long as it says that your fine....its definitely soft cheeses ....like spreadable cheeses definitely check them to see if they list unpasterized milk.....also fresh mozzarella is a no no

I agree. The cheese you have is fine.

Re: How do I know if cheese is pasturized?

If you go somewhere like whole foods or trader joe's, you'll see either "unpasteurized cow's milk" (or goat's milk, or whatever type of milk) or the words "raw milk" or "raw cheese" -- that means unpasteurized.

My favorite type of cheese (comte) is not pasteurized but I did find a pasteurized gruyere which is similar, just from cows on the Swiss side of the Alps instead of the France side. So I try to eat that while pregnant.

If the milk is pasteurized, the cheese is. Chat Icon

Re: How do I know if cheese is pasturized?

Unpasteurized cheeses are mostly imported soft cheeses like fresh mozzarella in the water, brie, crumbled blue cheese(not the dressing), feta, etc. Cheddar is pasteurized.

I avoid (unfortunately for me, they are my favorites) brie, blue cheese, feta, fresh mozzarella and gorgonzola.

Any hard cheeses or pre-packaged are usually fine, like cheddars, provolone, american, etc.
