Hawaii Info

So my European vacation fell through this summer. I'm thinking of Hawaii in October when we will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary, which will also serve as our delayed honeymoon.

I would love some recommendations from those that have been on pretty much anything - locations to stay in, hotels, restaurants, activities/sites not to be missed, etc. I'm thinking of Maui, so if you've been, tell me! All advice is welcome.

Also, I'm thinking a week and a half, and even that may be pushing it with DH's time off from work. I'm guessing a week wouldn't be enough time to travel and enjoy it. Thoughts?

Finally, has anyone worked with Travel Tom? My best friend worked with him to book her honeymoon this summer and raved. I'd like to book some of this travel with DH's miles/points but I'm not sure if he would work with us if that's the case. Anyone know?

Thanks and Im looking forward to hearing all the advice and recommendations.

Re: Hawaii Info

I've been to Hawaii twice and been to multiple islands. I would maybe recommend island hoping.

Each time I went we spent 3 days in Maui, and that was plenty for us.

Re: Hawaii Info

Highly recommend Island hopping. We spent 5 days in Maui and drove all over. It was enough time. The BIg Island seems to be the favorite amoung everyone.

Feel free to inbox me if you have any questions about Maui. We stayed at Ritz Carlton wich was spectacular but expensive.

Re: Hawaii Info

I HIGHLY recommend the Hyatt in Kauai. We were there in October for our first anniversary and loved it! We also did the Hyatt in Maui and it was nice but we preferred Kauai. I can't say enough about the Hyatt in Kauai.

We were in Hawaii for nine days and I think it was plenty of time for two islands. Any more than that and I would say you would need more time.

Re: Hawaii Info

I loved Hawaii! I am itching to go back.

We spent 12 or 13 nights in Hawaii and island hopped.

We stayed two or three nights in Oahu, five in Kauai and 5 in Maui.

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach in Oahu. Loved the hotel. It was right on the beach and in walking distance of the shops and restaurants. We did one of the timeshare sales to get some free vouchers for sightseeing. Plus we did Pearl Harbor which was amazing. We did one of those all day tours that took you everywhere.

We stayed at the Aston Islander on the Beach in Kapaa (Kauai); it wasn't great but it wasn't horrible. I think next time I'd rather go back and stay at a Hyatt or Marriott or something like that.

Most of our time there wasn't too great only because it rained everyday. We did do a sightseeing tour, plus a luau and we also did an ATV tour.

We spent 5 nights in Maui at the Ka'Anapali Beach Resort which was nice. We did the Road to Hana, drove to the top of Haleakala, did the aquarium, submarine tour, the Maui Tropical Planatation and drove around the island. We loved Maui the best!

Hope you have a wonderful time!

Re: Hawaii Info

DH and I have been to Hawaii 4 times and can't wait to go back. In September of 2012 we spent 14 days in Maui. Our previous trips we island hopped between Oahu Kauai and Maui. The shortest trip we took was this last one at 14 days and the longest was 4 weeks. I cannot wait to start planning our 2013 trip there!

Each island is different and feels like a completely different vacation so figure out what you really want to do (sightseeing, golf, laying on the beach, etc) and figure it out from there. For island hopping I think you should try to make sure you get 4 days min on each island. So if you're going for 10 days, I'd only do 2 islands. This way you won't feel too rushed.

Thanks for posting! Really helpful!

Many thanks to all that replied. I really appreciate the feedback.

I'm thinking two islands, one will be Maui for sure, since we only have 10 days max. I'd like a combination of relaxation and activity-filled, so if anyone has a recommendation for another island, I'd love to hear.

Also, please let me know restuarants, activities, any shopping that you really liked.

Thank you!

Re: Hawaii Info

I did a few blog posts on Hawaii - Maui is amazing but it is pretty big so can be lots of driving!

So we stayed in Kihei, which is kind of in the middle - a great hub with amazing restaurants!

Re: Hawaii Info

we went to hawaii last october for 10 nights, 5 on maui and 5 on kauai.

in maui we stayed at the four seasons, and spent most of the time laying out by the pool/beach. we did take a private tour around the road to hana which was cool and also went to a luau.

in kauai, we stayed at the st. regis, and that definitely felt like the more active part of the trip. we took surf lessons, a snorkel cruise trip around the na pali coast and guided hike through the wimea canyon.

if you have 10 days, i definitely recommend you do at least 2 islands.
