Fort Lauderdale hotels
I will be in Fort Lauderdale for one night with my DH. Looking not to spend a lot, but somewhere decent. We are flying into the airport. How far is the beach from there? Should I stay near the airport, as everything is driving distance? We will probably check out fort Lauderdale that one night for dinner.

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
DH and I have stayed 3 times at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 before our cruises out of Ft Lauderdale. It is about 3 miles from the airport and right near the cruise terminal (you can see the ships sail into port from the tower rooms). It has nice pools, there is a waterway stop right at the hotel (at the marnia). We have had some nice meals at the Grill 66 which is right on the water at the hotel. It is very easy to hop on the water taxi to get anywhere you want to go. There is a free shuttle they offer to the beaches as well (although we never used it).
If you are looking for more excitement - we stayed one time post cruise for 2 nights at the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood (which isn't far either). They have a whole entertainment complex next door to the hotel with comedy clubs, bars, restaurants and shops.
If you want to actually see FLL I would recommend the Hyatt though because it is so easy to hop on the water taxi right at the hotel and go anywhere and explore.

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
Hyatt is nice if you're staying in the new section... I won a bid on priceline and got hyatt and they put us in the old section... It was gross... Barely cleaned the rooms and the AC worked like sh*t... I was very disappointed, but I did pay only a 1/3 of the price so I guess I shouldnt have expected much
Oh and where the Hyatt is located, you have to take a cab to get to any restaurants/stores etc... Its on the other side of this huge drawbridge so yes, its convenient for the cruises but we felt stuck

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
I loved the Westin Beach resort. Stayed there two years ago while possibly considering a destination wedding in Fort Lauderdale. Also toured the Hilton beach resort and liked that one too.

I don't know we only stay in the tower. I thought they redid the whole hotel a few years ago.
We have never taken a taxi. We took the water taxi all over and had a great time. The water taxi takes you to most of the popular places and was a very relaxing and nice way to get around. We did a lot of sight seeing and had no trouble getting around.
Etd to add. I haven't done priceline before but several friends have and I have heard of many people complaining that they got the hotels (haven't heard about the hyatt so I can't comment) worst rooms. So I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't happen in your case. I think a lot of hotel give their worst rooms to priceline - which is why I have been afraid to try them out.

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
I would stay on the strip if i could... Beach Place Towers is pretty awesome! Not exactly cheap tho.. neither is the Hyatt!! We stay at Beach Place almost every year.
Will you have a car? or taking cabs? Once you are on the strip, there really is no need for a car. Beach Place, the Hyatt, the Ritz, Westin are all right smack in the middle of the stores, restaurants etc...
A little further up the strip, Ive stayed at the Sea Club but still close enough to the airport... Its "nice" .. .its not the Ritz or the Hyatt but you said not expensive.. it has what you need for ONE night and a bar on site right off the pool!
There is also a courtyard, never been there.
Its about a 10-15 min drive from the airport to the start of the strip... very straight forward. its literally exit the airport, head north on US 1... in 2 miles make a right onto SE 17th street... and go straight.. and your on the strip!!
i would ABSOLUTELY recommend you eat dinner at Casablanca Cafe!!! Its just north of Beach Place on the corner of Alhambra St and the strip! LOVE their food!

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
We will have a car. This is only just a stop over for one night before heading on with our vacation. But we want to go out to eat and walk around and see the area. We are staying on a Saturday night, so everything is pricey and since we are paying $$$ for our hotel in the keys, I wanted to keep the price down. The only reasonable hotels I found was the Holiday Inn convention center or the Hilton Marina. Anyone have any thoughts on those? If this was our trip, I would splurge and stay at something nicer, but since we are spending a lot on a hotel the rest of the week, I want to stay somewhere reasonable. We also won't be arriving until 6pm and leaving early AM the next day.

Re: Fort Lauderdale hotels
I have not stayed at either of those places... but the Sea Club is about $200 per night... for 2 adults.. they are currently having a 40% off sale which makes that about $120... might as well check it out.

We stayed at the Ocean Sky Resort for a few days in February and it was nice & very fairly priced. Its on the Galt Ocean Mile, very close to good places to eat.

Yup stayed there for an entire week.. it has everything you need especially for one night... rooms were nice.. pool was clean..bar was decent.. over all it was nothing special but not dirty i would stay there again.
PP's mentioned the Bahia Ma, i have stayed there which is also nice.
My whole thought is, how much time are you going to actually spend in the hotel room? For us, that's normally not much, just sleeping.. so if its got clean sheets and a clean shower im game!
