When about changing over utilities
Closing date is next Tuesday! When should I call about the utilities? Also, does anyone know the cimpanyes. That service Merrick? I was assuming it is LIPA for electric, and Keyspan for gas. What is the water company? Are there any other places I have to call other than cable/ Internet?

Re: When about changing over utilities
If you know the closing date then I would call a few days before and then just let them know when you're closing... I am only a few towns over from you and so I think the water is Aqua NY. LIPA for electricity, National Grid for Gas, and I think thats it, besides cable..

Re: When about changing over utilities
In Merrick I am sure it's National Grid for gas. Aqua for water.
You could have your realtor reach out to the listing agent to coordinate the change over of utilities. Find out when you should start services in your name (sometimes, if the closing is April 2, the seller will keep utilities on through April 2 and you pick up April 3, or sometimes they end theirs as of April 1 and you put everything in your name as of the closing date, April 2). Somewhat recently, I had a seller say that they would call LIPA at the closing, and they did, and then the buyer got on the phone and they switched it over right then and there!
Usually, if you call with the address ahead of time (and tell them you are closing on the house on x date), even if you haven't coordinated with the seller, the person at the utility company can see in their records when the seller's service is terminating, and start your account.
I would wait and call closer to the closing date, in case anything changes/gets postponed. If you call a day or two before, it should be fine.

Thanks Christine. No realtor, so I guess I'll just contact the sellers and ask. Thanks so much

Re: When about changing over utilities
I would do it now or at the latest tomorrow. When I called last time on the friday before my tuesday closing they made a big deal about it being very last minute, we couldn't get someone out to do readings etc. I forget whether that was for water, electric or gas
