Need furniture help with my living room
The room is narrow and does not have any continuous walls, other than the wall with the fireplace. We are trying to figure out what type of sofa set or sectional to purchase but cannot figure out how to set up the room. We close a week from today! I'm going to try to attach some pictures from redfin. For some reason they will not upload to my album.

Re: Need furniture help with my living room
Hmm tough room to configure
but I would put 2 chairs like this facing the stairs. I think these would work better than a love seat.
I would NOT do a sectional in that room at all. I don't think it looks right at all.
a couch like this opposite the chairs
with the flat screen above the fireplace. The fact that there are no contimous walls makes it really hard to pick a focal point in the room.
Also, trying to figure which entrance into room to not block off is hard (meaning do you have the sofa's back facing the stairs or the main entryway).
hope this gives you some idea

It is such a hard room! Thanks for the ideas. I wish they didn't open the dinning room up like they did Besides the master bedroom it is the only room we'll have a tv in for now. I want to be comfortable watching tv though. Right now the owners have the tv in the corner by the entryway, which is really far from where they have their sectional

Re: Need furniture help with my living room
OK - So this might be totally crazy (and I can't really tell from the pictures if this will work), but have you considered swapping the rooms and putting your dining room where their current living room is and your couch and tv in the current formal dining room?
I know the dining room is right off the kitchen, but it's very common now to have a family room that's open to the kitchen. I don't know how formal you want the living room set up to be, but if it's more of a tv room/hanging out/gathering space, it may work off the kitchen area (assuming that room has more wall space for a couch/sectional and tv set up).
The formal dining room is usually not used as often, so it's usually very easy to keep it neat and clean, so it may be a good room to have off of the entryway. Also, I love a fireplace in a dining room.
Just a thought...

Thanks Christine, I thought of that too but we'd prefer to give it a more formal look.

Re: Need furniture help with my living room
Looking at the pictures again - I would put the couch opposite the fireplace but more towards the entrance to the dinind room.
The 2 charis facing the stairs.
I didn't necessarily mean THOSE particular pieces of furniture.
I was just unsing them as examples. I think the chairs would be a much better option than a love seat, considering how little space there is in the room.
The chairs wouid keep the room more light and airty. 2 couches would make it seem cluttered.

Do you think think a couch would look funny partially blocking the entrance to the dining room? It is not going to be symmetrical.

The room isn't small is just narrow and has no full walls and the opening makes things unbalanced. It's maddening!!!!

I wouldn't put the couch up against the wall. I would have it off the wall to avoid that "funny" aspect. Basically envision that you could walk around the couch.
You may have to play around with the placement a bit, but basically I would envision a full wall where the entrance to the dining room is.
The archway looks wide enough that it would be a comfortable walk path into the dining room.
If there is room I would put one end table on the side nearest the stairs.
Been meaning to say - beautiful house.

Thanks, I love the house but this room is making me go nuts! A random side question: How do you keep furniture from moving when it is not against a wall?

They sell rubber discs that you can put underneath the legs of the furniture. This will protect the floors and prevent the couch from moving when you sit on it.

Re: Need furniture help with my living room
I agree with the suggestion to "float" the furniture rather than push it against the walls. If a room is large, that's what a lot of designers recommend doing anyway. I know you said it's narrow, but a pretty large space, so I think that will work (and give you a lot more furniture placement options).
