Info on a home
Is there a way to find out details on when a house last sold and for how much? Also, what the mortgage was when it was last purchased? I heard that these are recorded in public records. I don't see anything on Zillow or Trulia abou it.

I happen to like and use
refin.com a lot.
You can find out the last selling price (most of the time) as well as any price changes on the house you are looking at and when it sells it will list the selling rpice (once the property closes).
It also lists the current Zillow appraisal, nearby houses that are similar and what their asking price is and nearby similar houses that have sold recently.
I find it very helpful
ETA: Just re read your OP and one thing I am not sure about is finding out the mortgage owed on the house.

I use propertyshark.com
You can see when the home was purchased, who's name the deed is in, who they have a mortgage with & how much its for, if its been satisfied, etc.
You have to join & you get 4 free reports a day. For a fee its unlimited. I find that 4 is enough, if I'm interested in more than that, I just wait for the next day to look it up.

I have found that Zillow sometimes contains inaccurate information (especially with regards to selling prices of homes).
A licensed realtor has access to MLS records and public records that provides all of the information you are seeking.
