Is it worth it? (re: refurbishing a dining room set)
We were given a Drexel heritage dining room set from a family member when we moved it, we took it figuring we couldn't really afford a set we really wanted at the time. I know the set actually has good bones and is good quality, I don't particulary like it, its not our style, it's pecan wood. I found some pics of dining room sets re-furbished and was wondering if it would be worthwhile to do it and re-upholshter it. Also anyone have any idea what this cost would entail??
Here's a pic of one that's basically like ours:
Here I found an inspiration pic of what someone DIY'd to a table (chairs are diff) but just an idea of what I'd like to do:

My mom had her set re-done. Just stripped and stained, she re-upholstered her chairs herself.
I'll find out how much she paid and get back to you...
eta: she spent $2700 - but this was about 12-15 years ago.

That's quite a bit, I guess it would be worth it if I was in love with the chairs, but I'm not sure if the cane look will be back in style or if I love it that much...thanks for the pricing def gives me an idea.

OMG - I love the cane. Love, love, love the cane.
If the cane is in good shape - IMO - it's a classic look. Update the stain color, update the fabric and you're good to go.
Furniture today is CHEAP.
I bought Thomasville furniture and spent an arm and a leg - the back of the buffet is PRESSBOARD.
If it was my set - I'd redo it.

Yes its worth it imo..you can change the fabric on the seats. I just took a maghony bedroom Set from my grandma who recently passed away. I used old english polish n brass cleaner for the knobs. It looks great!! You will never find quality like that today!

I think it's worth it. I reupholstered our dining room chairs- super easy. You just need fabric and a staple gun!

I would redo it, like a PP said furniture is made so cheap today. I am pricing out dining sets now, I want Kincaid because I used them for my bedroom and the quality is fantastic.
I am looking at around 7k, I have to shop it down south still......

I reupholstered my DR set and it was EASY and CHEAP! I plan on getting better fabric next time around, but with kids and never doing it before, I did not want to spend a fortune on high-end fabric yet. I spent about $40 and 2 hours. If you reupholster and then do the distressed pain, the set would look amazing!

Re: Is it worth it? (re: refurbishing a dining room set)
We are in a similar situation. Our neighbors gave us their mother's dining room set before they moved (2 months after we moved in). They said their mother would want it to be with a family (we were expecting our 1st child and had just moved in).
It is a 50+ year old (date stamped on back) Drexel Heritage Set. Table, 6 chairs, china cabinet and buffet. They had a dog who did some damage to the table legs and there is some chipping on the bottom of some other pieces.
I am leaning towards having it refurbished. Furniture today is just not what it used to be. I know this set is solid wood and well-made. The difference though is that I kind of like our set.
But, I haven't looked into it yet and imagine it will be expensive.
