how long to plan for Key West
We are planning to go to Key West. We are driving from Ft. Lauderdale. Our friends say anything over 3/4 days is too much. I wanted to stay for 5 nights and they said it is too much. We are staying at a resort and I'd like at least have one day to hang out by the pool. What is a good amount of time to go for?

Re: how long to plan for Key West
I don't think 5 nights is too long, but I can see how people would feel like 3-4 is adequate. It really is up to you and what you're looking for in a vacation. I've never stayed longer than 3 nights, but I've always wished I had an extra night or 2.
During the day, you can shop, visit the Hemingway House, the Pirate and Shipwreck Museums, the Aquarium, the Southernmost Point. You can bike ride and do all kinds of water sports, go on a fishing charter. You can hang out at your hotel by the pool, but there really is no beach to speak of.
The nightlife is super fun and can get a little crazy, but if you're not into the bar scene then 5 nights might be a little much. There are also some great restaurants.

Re: how long to plan for Key West
Thanks for responding.
We very much are into the nightlife and dining out. DH loves live music. The way it works out with five nights, it gives us four full days there. We probably won't get in there until late the first day and have to leave super early the last day to catch an afternoon flight home from Ft. Lauderdale.

Re: how long to plan for Key West
We stayed four days and three nights. It was ok for me becquse I was pregnant and didnt drink or stay out past midnight. I think five days is good if you are into the nightlife.
We are hoping to go back this year so I can take advantage of the nightlife and I would like to snorkel.

Re: how long to plan for Key West
We went twice and stayed 5 nights both times and it was great. In fact, I didn't want to leave either time. I definitely don't feel that 3-4 days is too much. Don't forget, you have to account for travel time from Fort Lauderdale so depending on when your flights arrive/depart, the first and last day will be cut short.
I would do 5 nights.

I've been kicking it around whether to stay one less night, but Marianne...you sold me. I'm leaving it as is. And like you said, we leave early the last day to get to Ft. Lauderdale flight home and the first day, I want to take our time driving there from Ft. Lauderdale.
