Is this too much? RE: Electrician

We are having 10 high hats installed plus 3 plate switches. They want to charge us $1500 for labor and materials. This sounds high to me, however, I have absolutely no experience with this! TIAChat Icon

Depends.. is this a licensed shop or are you using an unlicensed guy?

Does the wiring exist or are they going to have to buy and run all new wiring?

The high hats themselves can be pretty pricey depending on the trim, size and type of light. I think our LED hi-hats were about 50 a piece.. but they can go higher.

Yes, he is licensed. The wiring is existing in some spots. Most of the lights will be the 6 inch, only 2 will be 4inch.

I don't know.. it seems fair to me but I'm biased because I'm married to an electrician and I know what a pain it is to get those lights set up properly. You can ask him for an itemized breakdown and see what he's charging for labor versus material so you'll have a better idea of what you are paying for and why.

It sounds a little high. I'm going to work up a mock estimate for you (I happen to be a project estimator for an electrical contractor)

It also depends on the fixture though...

ETA: It actually is pretty much right on the money-assuming no profit for the electrician above the cost of his labor, which, if this is a side job for an electrician, would be okay. If you are going through a contractor, then they would add up to a 15% profit- bringing it up a few hundred dollars.

Putting in $50 for each fixture (using Jeannie's pricing), 10' of wiring for each fixture and switch (assuming you are going to connect to a local circuit and not run back to the electrical cabinet), an inspection and a small work labor rate of $55/hr brings you to about $1300 without a profit. Adding in 15% overhead brings you to $1500

High hats will run about $150 each so that seems like a fair price. I know when combined it seems like a fortune for those lights but I heard they are a PITA.

Ditto this. My dad and brother are electricians and I see firsthand how long this stuff takes and the complexity. I think it's fair.
