Rotten egg odor coming from oil burner
Every once in a while, I smell rotten eggs when the oil burner has kicked on. It is in our garage. It is pretty bad when I go in there. It will last a few hours and then go away. What is it? I told our landlord and he said he is going to replace it soon. I noticed it the other day when it was raining and it was really strong. The garage isn't insulated very well.

That is a gas leak. You should call Keyspan immediately. Do you have gas in there? And I would get out of the house if you don't have a carbon monoxide detector.

Re: Rotten egg odor coming from oil burner
Do you have any natural gas in the house? Stove, furnace? You mention the oil burner. Is it definitely oil? The rotten egg smell is added to natural gas to make it easy to detect..

Re: Rotten egg odor coming from oil burner
It is definitely oil!! No gas.. And it doesn't happen all the time. Just once in a while. At first I thought it was coming from the washing machine. I will have to call someone to come service it I guess..

We have multiple carbon monoxide detectors. None have ever gone off.

Re: Rotten egg odor coming from oil burner
i would call a licensed plumber just to err on the side of caution.
we smelled that same smell coming from my closet over a period of time. one day it got really bad and someone suggested i call Nat Grid, so i did.
it was an old gas pipe that used to be used for the fireplace on the other side of my closet. it's been a wood burning fireplace for as long as we knew, so we never thought it could be gas.
well, it was, and the gas co. locked our gas up until we had it fixed, which took a few days. they needed a licensed plumber to send them an invoice stating they did A, B & C to rectify.
good luck.

I will contact my landlord. I haven't smelled it since the other day. It is weird. I am going to see if there is a drain in there that could be causing it. We live in a levit ranch and they moved the burner from inside the house to the garage many years ago.
