TV placement NOT over fireplace
I know this is often a topic of debate but I am coming in later to the game. DH and I are closing on our new home next week In our new den there is a fireplace There are also French doors out to the patio (three of them, as one is stationery). Because of the furniture we have and the setup of the room, I am trying to figure out where to place the TV that is NOT over the fireplace. I think it would be too high for comfortable viewing there.
Anyone do bookcases on either side of the fireplace and put your TV there? I have been looking at pics online and debating on that idea. Maybe built ins?
This is a pic of the room with the seller's furniture. Unfortunately, we have a sofa and loveseat, so where they have their media center (not in the pic) we will have our loveseat.
Hope this pic comes through! [

Re: TV placement NOT over fireplace
Do you specifically want it mounted on the wall? If not, I would consider putting it on stand or small TV console kitty-corner to the left of the fireplace as I look at this photo (where the wing-backed chair is). We had a very similar set-up in the house I grew up in and that's what my mother did but that was long before flat-panel TVs.

Re: TV placement NOT over fireplace
You can caddy-corner it if you plant o put it on a stand or entertainment center. If you're looking to hang it on the wall - maybe the wall opposite the fire place? Can't see in pic what is there.

Re: TV placement NOT over fireplace
I would float a couch in front of the doors and put it on the wall where they have a couch now.
I really don't like the way tv's look next to a fire place or caddy cornered.

Agreed - that is similar to how my den is set up. We have a fireplace to the side of our couch (it's a sectional, so the smaller piece faces the fireplace), and the TV on a console on the opposite wall. Our doors to the patio are on the same wall as the couch, but they are off to the side, so the couch doesn't block the doors.
In your case, assuming the room is big enough, I think floating the couch in front of the doors (leaving a wide enough space to go in and out) would work well.

I was going to say to put it in the corner, but I like this idea too

The only problem is, of course, is if you want to be able to look outside from the couch. Oh, and if the doors open into the room (as opposed to pushing outside) you need to have space for them to open. And also think of glare on the TV from the outside.
Okay so there are a few problems. But I really like this idea in theory.

Yeah, those were things I worried about. I also don't really like the idea of floating the couch since we have little kids. I feel like on hardwood it would slide if you leaned on it.

Re: TV placement NOT over fireplace
Now based on the pic, what do you all think of putting the tv on the wall to the LEFT of the doors ( where there are currently pictures)?

It's hard to tell from the pic - my concern would that it would be too far to the side to make that work. You want to be able to relax on the couch and watch tv comfortably and the angle could be bad.

What about putting the front of the couch over the rug?
