Godparents

We are practicing Catholics and i am a song leader at 4 different parishes. With #2 I am having a hard time picking a Godmother. We have a Godfather but some of the closest people in my life are Jewish. In the Catholic Church you can not be a godmother if you have not been baptized. I am wondering do you think its wrong if we just pick a Godfather and still call my Aunt the Godmother?

I was my niece's godmother in a catholic church, even though I was baptized lutheran. I was never asked if I was baptized in a catholic church, so it wasn't an issue (even though lutheran is still christian, I know the catholic church still feels it is different). I suppose if your church specifically asks about the godparents baptisms, then you'd have to pick someone who is catholic......I know someone who picked the same godmother for all 3 of her children for this very reason. My brother and his girlfriend just baptized there friends son ~ they are practicing catholics and so is my brother, his girlfriend is not catholic and she is still his godmother and was involved in the whole baptism.

I am the godparent to my niece ~ They did not have a godfather ~ so the priest had me do everything for godmother/godfather and then when the men went up with the candles I did that too ~ it was weird since I was the only lady. It was very special.

DS's Godfather isn't Catholic, and he was able to do it, no problem.

We are Lutheran but it was similar bc my sister wanted her best friend to be my nieces godmother and it wasnt acceptable to the church bc shes jewish. So i was the next choice
Im not sure if its ok to just have one godparent, in the eyes of the church, but i hope so bc we have NO options for godfather.

Can you only have 1 "official" Godparent in the Catholic church? I was raised Catholic (and still attend Catholic mass w/my mom sometimes), but I baptized my son Episcopalian & the priest at our church told us that we had to have at least 2 "official" Godparents (we were allowed to have up to 3). I wonder if it's the same in your church...?

Also, have you considered asking the same person to be Godmother to both of your children? It's pretty common in my family to do that...then perhaps you can make your aunt a "witness" if she's not Catholic?

Does your church ask the person to show proof? Reason being, I know a few non Catholics who are godparents themselves. I didn't they could either until a few years ago. It may work out.

I was able to be my niece's Godmother even though I am not Catholic...the other sponsor/godfather was Catholic - they said if one of the two was Catholic then it was OK.

Call your church and find out specifically. Every church is different. Our church allowed us to have one catholic godparent. THe other one didn't need to be catholic but had to aggree to support the child's catholic upbringing. So my sister, who is Catholic and made all of her sacriments was the Godmother and BIL who was baptized episcapalian but made no sacriments beyond that was fine to be the Godfather.
