and so it begins....(re: work)
still in hiding at work (well, pretty much everywhere actually since I'm only 5 weeks!!)....and I was just told of a work happy hour event someone is planning for St. Paddy's day on March 16th How have you ladies avoided these things until you came "out" at work? In my pre-pregnancy life I was always social & went out for everything! Sure signs of a drinking problem I suppose when everyone notices you're absent at these things
oh and side question, how far along were you when you came out at work and how did you tell everyone?

When there were events like that prior to me coming out, I would say that I had other plans and skip out.
For DS, I came out at work at 12 weeks. For DC 2, I told my boss at 8 weeks (we were travelling) and then the rest of my group at 12 weeks.

see that's what is difficult for me, I can't really skip out on this since my good friend at work happens to have her family coming in from Canada that weekend and her niece is coming whom I've never met and she's dying for me to meet her!! UGH! the pressure! I think I might have to spill the beans just to her so she knows what's going on...unless I just lie and say I'm on antibiotics or something....

There were certain people who I knew would notice if I didn't have a glass of wine with dinner or while we were out. I always used the excuse that I was on antibiotics.

if you have to go, then say you are on antibiotics.... as for me i tried to hold off telling work until 12 weeks but i told them at 10.5 because i go to my doc appts during my lunch break and one time it took me an hour and a half, so i had to fill them in on what was going on.

You can go and order drinks that look like they would have alcohol but actually don't. Like a cranberry juice. If someone asks what you're drinking just say cranberry and vodka. I like the antibiotics excuse too.

I would either say that you are on antibiotics or fake drink... i did that a few times in the beginning where i would just order something and pretend to sip it and then put it back on the bar before anyone would notice or dump some out in the bathroom or something.
I told work when I was between 12/13 weeks. It worked out well for me cause it was the week of the xmas party so I didn't have to worry about fake drinking at the party

Ugh, I feel your pain! I would order a drink like club soda & cran or a beer and pretend to sip it.
I had a similar situation with the Superbowl and we weren't ready to come out to our friends yet. I ended up drinking water out of a beer bottle...I think we fooled everyone but who knows. :)
For work stuff I have just been declining invites...but my job is more of an active vs drinking group and everyone is bugging me to sign up for the half maraton the entire company is running!! I don't think so...I will cheer them on though
ETA - telling work...I just started sharing the news this week like a PP said b/c of Dr's appts getting in the way. I didn't make a broadcast but have been sharing the news with teams as appropriate, so about half of my company knows. I'm almost 12 weeks.

If you HAVE to go, then order a fake drink:
cranberry juice in a cocktail-like glass Order a beer, take it to the ladies room and fill it with bottled water -- return to the bar and drink from that bottle.
I had a lot of business dinners at work during my first trimester and I found that whispering to the waiter or bartender that you're hiding a pregnancy made the situation easier -- it happens much more often than you'd think!

I would either order a fake drink, cranberry and soda or something like that ~ (whisper to the bartender your in hiding) or I like the antibiotic excuse.
I told my job with DS a little bit before 12 weeks because someone made a comment about me being pregnant to me then I was paranoid and my belly was really puffy so it was getting harder for me to hide.

If you want to go, go... order a cranberry and club, or a club soda with lime and one of those cocktail straws... and if anyone asks (if you're a beer drinker and you've "changed it up"), tell them that you and DH gave up alcohol for lent or something... or that you don't feel like drinking. Don't miss out on anything like this bc of the drinking aspect, just gotta learn to lie reallllllly well.
ETA: I told work pretty much as soon as I POA'd... I have to have a lot of bloodwork and appointments, so they needed to know what the deal was so they'd stay off my arse.

Re: and so it begins....(re: work)
I was 8 weeks when we had to spend 2 nights near the home office for the company's holiday retreat. Both nights, I cornered the bartenders and had them make me something that looked alcoholic. I hate beer and soda so I ended up getting orange juice and cranberry juice. It looked like a sex on the beach. It was perfect and no one had any idea.

This is a great idea if you observe lent!
My first pregnancy I would drink cran, pineapple and club soda in a tiny glass with a twist of lime and I would pretend it was a girly drink.
This time I told everyone just about one second after I POAS. So I didn't have to hide much.
