Those that have flown to Key West
I was thinking of flying into Miami and driving to Keywest. Now I see that Islip does not fly direct to Miami. Those that visited Key West, what airline did you fly and did you fly directly to Key West?

I'd fly into Lauderdale instead, and then drive. Islip is just so convenient, and there's not a huge distance between Miami/Lauderdale airports.

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
When I went we took a inn ting flight and flew directly into Key West. I personally much preferred it to having to rent a car and drive down. It's a good 3-4 hour drive.

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
Those that flew and rented the car to drive from ft. Lauderdale or Miami, do you get to KeyWest late between the flight and drive? Would you suggest spending a night in Fr. Lauderdale and leaving the next morning early to finish off with the drive?

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
We flew to Ft Lauderdale, I think on Jet blue. We stayed overnight there and then did the drive the next day stopping at Everglades National Park. If we hadn't wanted to go to the park we would have done the flight and drive the same day. It's not that bad of a drive and there's some great scenery and places to stop and eat/sightsee on the way.

Thanks everyone!
Can I ask, how many nights is sufficient to stay? Will five nights be too much? I figure the first day we may not get there until late. also, where did you all stay?

We flew into ft Lauderdale and drove to kW.
It was actually a really nice and relaxing trip. I think btw the flight and drive we were in kW by 4. But we took the early flight from I slip. I don't remember exactly but I think we spent 4 nights there.

I'm confused You say you flew directly to Key West but then mentioned connections? Does no one fly directly there with no stops???

i just checked expedia. All airlines seem to have one connection. My guess is that it's a small airport and larger planes can not land there. Direct and non stop flights mean separate things

Nope no direct flights. The aiport is tiny tiny tiny and 99% if not all planes are small. Like they let the legs down and you get out small. It would depend for me on what my plans were. Flying into FL and driving to KW is not bad at all, but it's a pain in the asss for the return trip sp keep that in mind. You might get into FL at 10am on say Monday and then drive to KW enjoy for 5 days and on day 6 you leave out of FL at 7am. You would have to get up at 1am to leave for the airport or leave KW a night early to stay in FL. Just keep that in mind. I have done both and really prefer to just fly into KW.

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
There are NO direct flights from the NYC area to Key West. I think most flights would have a layover in Miami and from there you would have to take a small propeller plane to Key West.
Both times that we've gone, we flew to Miami and drove to Key West. If you can get a flight from MacArthur to Fort Lauderdale I would do that. Fort Lauderdale is only 30 minutes more than Miami and from what I hear, the airport is nicer.

Both times we got to Miami at 2 PM. We would get to Key West around 8 PM. The drive is only 3 hours but we had to grab our luggage, get the rental car and eat lunch. It's really not a bad drive at all..very easy. We were fine with driving right away. However both times we opted to leave Key West a day early and spend a night in Miami. That way we didn't have to rush on the last day to make our flight, KMIM?

Both times we spent 5 nights in Key West. It's definitely not too much. In fact the first time we went, we spent 5 nights in Key West and 2 in South Beach. We had never been to Key West or South Beach. When we got to South Beach we regretted spending 2 nights there and wished we had opted to spend that extra night in Key West.
As for hotels, the first time we stayed at Southernmost on the Beach which was great. The second time we stayed (beginning of this month) at The Reach Resort only because I got a great deal and it was cheaper than Southernmost on the Beach. We loved The Reach Resort as well. Both hotels were on the beach which is nice because not all Key West hotels are on the beach. They were both just a few blocks away from Duval Street as well. I would recommend either one.
If you check out both hotels and find that they are pricey, then I would check out Southernmost Hotel. It's the sister hotel to Southernmost on the Beach. Southernmost Hotel is not on the beach but you can use the amenities (including beach access) of Southermost on the Beach. FM me if you have questions! We love Key West!

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
We also stayed at Southernmost Hotel. It was decent. Also, the beaches in the keys may not be what you had in mind when thinking of a typical 'beach vacation'.

I had edited after when I realized it was confusing but forgot tp remove directly - we flew into Key West - we didn't do the drive.
There are no direct flights from NY.

We stayed three nights. I wouldn't recommend less because it takes awhile to get there regardless of whether you fly or drive.
We stayed at the Westin and loved it. We walked pretty much everywhere we went.

We flew to Fl Lauderdale and then drove to KW. I think its an amazing drive and a great way to start the vacation. I am also not a big fan of those small planes.
We stay at Center Court cottages and love it - it has a little kitchen, porch area and access to pools. When we go we stay for two weeks, we really love it there!

Re: Those that have flown to Key West
We stayed for a week and rented a condo in the Truman Annex. I think 5 nights would be enough time, but if you have more time there's certainly enough to keep you busy.
