amnio?

for those who did it, what did you think of it? My recent blood work showed a slightly increased risk for my age. My ob is letting me wait until i do a level 2, but he has started bring ing up the amnio again after he was adamant about not wanting to do it on me. What do you ladies think?

my ratio went up because i had just passed my birthday at my lvl 2 ultrascreen. dh and i decided to do the amnio just to be on the safe side and went to the northshore high risk practice for obs that were real experienced with the procedure. the mental process was probably worse than the procedure itself. best of luck on whatever you decide!

I had one with my first pregnancy and I'll be honest, it hurt a little! I didn't look while they did it, but I felt every second of it. My doctor needed to get more fluid then normal, so it took about five minutes total, but I have been told it is supposed to take much less.

I just had an amnio a week and a half ago. It isn't terrible, more nerve wracking than anything else. The pain was minimal. We chose to do it because of ultrascreen results (which weren't really bad) but in combination with my age 38, we felt that we needed peace of mind. For us, proceeding with an amnio has a lot to do what we would do if we found out anything was wrong. I think that if someone knows that they will continue a pregnancy no matter what-I can't see the point in an amnio. I saw Dr. Rafael at Winthrop perinatal assoc. and he was amazing. Explained everything, even called with preliminary results on a saturday night. I really think the worst part was having to wait 3 weeks after the ultrascreen results to do the test. I had one. I never did the 12 week scan and blood work. I decided that based on my age (38) there was no way I was going to have great results. We decided on doing the amnio. The actual procedure was not bad at all. It was the build up before hand that had me crazy.

After the fact I just had to take it easy the rest fo the day in bed and the next day to lay low. I had it on a Thurs and by Sat I was all good.

I also was happy to know yes or no if there was soemthing wrong.

I had three in my first two pregnancies and need to have another this one.

Two were for lung maturation at 38w and 37w, 6d.

The other was to test for Down's due to high risk ultrascreen at ~18w.

The anticipation is consixerably worse than the actual. It's relatively quick. I needed to relax the rest of the day for all of them and was back to normal the next day, though with the 18w one I had a (large) 15 month old so I took some additional care for the following days after that one.

Good luck with your decision! I would do it again as I needed peace of mind (and we would have had a decision to make) for the Down's test; I have no choice but to do it before my 38w delivery each time due to hospital policy.

thank you all so much for replying. I am still up in the air but thinking im letting it go until after the level 2- if everything seems normal, i may brush it off. I too have the age against me- 35. The nuchal sono was negative but the blood was increased risk. Ill let you know how it goes. I go for the level 2 in 2 weeks. thanks for all the support.

My 12 week and 16 week blood work showed elevated risks for a few things. I wanted to wait to make a decision on the amnio after my Level II. I had the Level II last week and everything looked great. I'm still being monitored closely for possible growth issues, but the other possible concerns seemed to not be an issue based on the ultrasound. I decided it wasn't worth it after the good ultrasound results to have the amnio. My perinatologist agreed.
